Underdrive pulleys [ merged 1/6/07]

Majority of DSMers suggest the OEM Crank Pulley. But is there an aftermarket pulley out there with a dampener/harmonic balancer that is worthwhile to purchase? Any info will help. Although the instructions are easy to change this part out.. I plan to provide a VFAQ once I decide what type of pulley I will use.

I believe Buschur is one of the only people who sell a harmonic dampner pulley but it's very expensive.

There are couple of different options from different vendors (though they all might be the same pulley). Cost is around $300-$350. When you compare it to cost of full UR solid pulley kit (also around $300), it is not all that much more money.

But you can get a stock pulley for around $90.

I guess it all comes down to $$$, if you can afford it, go with the underdrive pulley with the balancer. I am still sticking with the stock pulley.

But I noticed that Buschur has one with a dampener as pointed out earlier in the thread. Besides the weight, whats the quality of the Buschur part like? Is 350.00 worth it? Can I still be a 12 sec daily driver with the OEM pulleys that are under 100.00? :)

i've heard that on our cars underdrive pulleys dont really help much. let the rustang people keep doing it if it helps them.

I run an Unorthodox Racing crank pulley. The pulley is considerably lighter, and look's good. Rev's came quicker and smoother, I would recommend one.

That is good for a 1G dsm, but us 2nd Gens need the dampener as a safety feature if I am correct?? ::shrugs shoulders:: It looks as if I will just buy an OEM pulley. Are there any 2gens out there with some OEM failry new crank pulleys for sale??

Can you vouch for the quality of the part listed. I like the price, but is it a genuwine mitsu part. I asked my autobody shop for their discount and I can get a genuwine mitsu part for 103 + tax. If this part is good shown in the web addy above, I will get that one for the cheaper price. 75.00 is pretty good.

what about for us automatic guys. Will a lightened underdrive pulley work. The stocker sh*t a brick when the dampener fell apart. Bought an oem one from a jeep dealer for 150 bucks in september. But i want to replace it with a lightened one.

I just ordered one (like 10 min. ago), so I'll let you know when it comes in and when it's installed. might take awhile to tell you about the quality as compared to the stock one, since I plan on replacing it as preventative maintenance at the end of March (Spring Break). Nothing's wrong with the one on there now (almost 70K on car), but keep reading stories of crank pulleys separating...OMG

Well, I can tell you about what I have read. AUTOs have a less chance of crankwalk.. but there have been some cases. Usually you want a Crank Pulley with a dampener for all DSMs. You can look at it as a safety feature.
People who have gotten lighten/undedrive pullies have noticed any little or no performance increase. Most aftermarket pullies will not have a dampener so that is the downside.
Bottom line, just replace it with an OEM part and spend your money where it counts... fuel management and turbo upgrades!!!
Anyone feel free to tell me if I am wrong:thumb:

From what i keep hearing, i think i will just stick with my oem pulley and spend my money elsewhere. If i ever have some money laying around i'll get a lightened pulley and let u guys know how it works out. Thanks for the info.

There may be a chance of damage without the harmonic dampener....but I've yet to see an actual example of it. Has anyone else actually seen a damaged engine that was caused by a UDCP?

I just bought an AF/X underdrive pulley from Howell automotive.

The 2gnt guys seem to all like it... and i'll have some personal results come next monday. Price is 152, shipped, with belts..

I do have it sitting right here.. and that thing is defintley strong, small, and light. Definitley looking forward to it.

- whups.. just saw that you were 1g... Still check the site though, they have a lot of 1g stuff..
