Hey everyone... I have a 96 eagle talon with the 420a engine and I'm trying to do a few mods to spark a little life into it ROFL Anyway I am in need a good place or places to buy underdrive pulleys from. I would like it if somewhere sells all 3 with belts as a kit but if not thats ok too. I am also plannig on getting this

and was woundering if I need to get an aftermarket intake manifold so they'll fit together. Also a good spot to buy one? Thanx for any and all input! :thumb:

You should be posting in the 2G N/T Bolt-on Tech page to get responds from n/t people.

Anywas, the only pulley avaliable for our cars is the crank pulley. Here are the 2 most popular; unorthodox found at http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/ and afx found at http://www.howellautomotive.com/. Both are almost exactly the same; lightweight and have 30% underdrive. The afx comes with the belt, while onorthodox you will need to order new belts from a local parts store. Some people have successfully used ebay pulleys, but I personally wouldn't trust them.

Also, you will need a special tool (3 ton puller) to get the old pulley off. You should be able to rent/buy this tool at a local parts store. Here is a writeup on how to install: http://seangordon1.tripod.com/UDPinstall.html.

If they are just boring out the stock 2gnt throttle body then no, you won't need to get an aftermarket intake manifold.

While the danagers should be taken into account for the 4g63, the 420a has no or very little chance of being damaged by installing a udp.

The 420a has a small rubber insert as it's "Harmonic Damper" and nothing will go out of balance as long as the pulley is equally balanced (1 reason why I don't trust ebay pulleys). This insert is removed when installing a udp, but it does very little damping to protect your engine plus your adding a lighter pulley.

thanx to both you guys.. that was very insightful IHeartTurbo :thumb: and ericmetcalf11 thanx for the 2 sights

I ordered that BOMZ under drive pulley for my 420 A and let me tell you, i wasted my time! I put it on and it had play! :notgood: yea rigghtt...i was all ready with my blowtorch to heat the new pulley up and install it...until i was just placing the new pulley over the crank snout, it just slipped on like butter and it had tremondous play....SO EBAY PULLEYS :notgood: is a NO NO.:notgood:

I talked about this before. Its not the balancing that is the danger issue, it is vibrations that the pulley dampens.

But in the end its your call. Like I said earlier in the thread, I know people who have done it with no "noticeable" effects. I would be curious to check their crank bearings after running it like that for a year.

What Eric was saying is that the stock pulleys have very little or no dampening effect at all. They shouldn't even be called "dampeners," just "pulleys." Because of this, one can replace them with a solid UDP and see no difference in terms of rotational crank vibration reduction.

Plenty of people have had these things for much longer than a year, and their main bearings are perfectly healthy.

AFX = 20% underdrive (good, but could be better) & reasonably priced at $140
Unorthodox = 30% underdrive (the best you can get without limiting your accessories' output) & outrageously expensive at $280.

The AFX unit does come with both belts (AC/PS and alternator), but the alternator belt they supply is too long. I had to take mine to Advance and ask them for the next size shorter.

i would go with the AF/X in my opinion. I actually bought one a few years back, but just never put it on my car. If you want it, you can buy it off of me. It comes with belts too.

DO NOT GET AN AFTERMARKET INTAKE MANIFOLD. I have one and they are a pain, trust me on this one. P&P will work just as good IMO.
