THERE is so many types of RTV what are their differences. i went to napa today and i saw ultra; grey, black, blue, and orange?

i answered my own question. those of you who want to know check out permatex.com
i do have another question though: what do you all think would be better for oil pan, ultra grey or ultra black or ultra blue? permatex says all 3 can be used on oil pans... what have you guys used?

I used Mopar black on my transmission and oil pan. Never had problems with either.
i think im going to go ahead and use GREY on my oil pan without a gasket. also while i was looking at http://permatex.com
i noticed they had an rtv for cooling systems (water pump, water pipes, etc.)
have any of you used it on your water pipe O-ring gasket to the water pump becasue mine is leaking about 5 drops a minute and i need to solve this annoying problem....

UltraGray is the correct replacement for the factory specified RTV in the service manual for the pan and rocker cover.

Do not use RTV on the waterpipe. The o-ring does the job of sealing the waterpipe to the pump housing and doesn't need anything else. The RTV will reduce it's ability to seal and flex. It can actually create ways for the coolant to leak. Make sure that the water pipe is free of any corrosion where the o-ring sits and that the o-ring is lubed with coolant before putting the pump on so it isn't cut or torn.

im not trying to be rude, but does anyone agree with that? ive tried lubing the o ring with coolant before installation and it still leaks:barf: i dont think my water pipe has any corrosion so that cant be a problem. if what he stated above is true, what else can i do?

I use RTV blue on my car and it will flex enough for the water pipe seals. Just make sure your using new o-rings when you do it. My pipe didn't seal with a fresh cleaned block and new seals. Maybe with all new parts it will seal without help but each car can be different.

Steve is absolutely correct (as Mitsu manual will verify) but he forgot to mention the following (which is also in the Mitsu manual):
One common source of a water pump leak is the o-ring not installed properly. You must replace the o-ring in the crossover inlet pipe by putting it on the pipe end first, coating with coolant, and then insert pipe with o-ring into water pump – do not put the o-ring into water pump first as it will not seat properly and will leak.

thats how i did it and i had no luck, still leaks.... suggestions???

Everything has to be clean to get a seal.

Take a scotch brite pad (the green kitchen scrubbers) and polish the waterpipe end.
Get a new o-ring. Make sure you didn't scratch the inside of the water pump.

Did you use a OEM waterpump?

Steve

i havent replaced the pump since ive owned the gsx, but it appears to be stock. what else can i do? ive torn apart my turbo and radiator to many times trying to get to this water pipe to stop the leak and still no luck.....any other suggestions?
