On the way to work last week. running about 80mph, 15lbs of boost, passed a honda civic. I put on the brake lightly and down shifted.. then all hell broke loose.. My car started to smoke, lost power, smoking under the hood, into the cabin.. it didnt want to stay crunk.. it began to run hot, and smoke even more.. I pulled over, the car cut off.. it was leaking antifreeze, and steam was everywhere.. I finally got it home today and looked at the damage.. I first checked the turbo, still spinning freely(with minimal shaft play). I then checked the oil. there was no signs of water mixing. BUT>>> all in the motor compartment, especially on the left side(above the transmission) there is this fine grayish silverish flaky stuff on mostly everything.. I think it is a blown head gasket.. because when i turn the car over it spins freely and i hear a off and on hissing sound.. what do u guys think?

Yeah, might be a blown head gasket. Time to start taking your motor apart! Oh the joy of it all! And what the hell is crunk? Freakin' kids and their rap music.... :p

well.. i had a head gasket out of a rebuild kit from slow boy racing.. it was a cheap lookin gasket, organic looking. which do u recommend?

I got it from slowboy for $88. I also bought like $3k worth of parts from there at the time so they gave me a little off on the gasket. Whoopdie! Haha. It's a metal gasket. It's supposed to be pretty strong and it wasn't as expensive as the HKS one I think.

well.. i will take the head off tomorrow.. will i need to resurface the head? I just had it done about 3 weeks ago?

Before you go and just take the head off, I'd do a compression test. If that is bad, THEN I'd start taking the head off. If the compression test is good. Then I'd start looking around for a busted coolant line. or sumthin. Maybe dump some more coolant in there and look to see if it starts leaking outta somewhere. If not, maybe start it up, let it run for a minute to see if it starts spraying out. If still I can't find it, then I'd go and take the head off and see what's down there. Also you should be fine just running a stock mitsu comosite head gasket from the dealer along with ARP's. That combination holds up well, but people always jump for the metal ones for some reason. If you get a metal one, better make sure your block and head are both machined flat, because if not, the metal ones COULD (not saying it possitively will) but COULD leak, when the composite one would have sealed up nicely.

I agree with what me612 said.....put some water in it and look for a coolant leak...do a compression test to see if you have a blown HG.....get a stock mitsu HG and arp's too if ya need to replace the gasket.....to see if ya really have to shave the head again, which seems short for only 3 weeks,ya can lay a straight edge of somekind at angles on the head surface(like a 100's and 10's 12 inch scale ruler is pretty straight)and check to see if there if it vairies in straightness on areas on the head with a feeler guage.....anyone know the amount of gap diffrence ya can have out there chime in...its also in you hanes or chiltins rebuilding book or the service maual....sorry about the bad spelling

Suggestion. If you use an organic HG again, don't boost on it like that until it's seated in for at least a month of normal driving, preferable 2. The organics don't seem to take kindly to that until they've been in the car awhile.

well.. first of all, let me thank all of u guys 4 everything. The silvery-grayish flaky stuff was heated head-gasket.. like i figured.. I didnt do a compression test or anything, because i didnt have time or a compression test tool and i checked all the coolant hoses before i got started.. I pulled the head off and . well look for yourselves! I am gonna clean the block and head, check the head surface and get a factory head gasket and start over!

I dont know it came in a SBR rebuild kit. i am gonna get one from the local dodge dealership today.. unless someone can tell me a better gasket

That does look like the OEM gasket, dunno why it would fail like that if you weren't abusing the motor. Hope there's not any additional damage.

It is a topline head gasket. At least that is what SBR sends out with thier rebuild kits. This is bad news because i just put one of these in my engine. Shit.

It never ceases to amaze me at how well the stock mitsu head gaskets work. Even running 20 lbs of boost daily on 8.8 :1 compression I have had no issues.
