so i took my car to get smog yesterday and i didn't pass smog my registration is due April 8th and the car was throwing out bluish white smoke from the exhaust i heard one of the guys said it could be the turbo the other guy was being a jerk didn't really tell me much what was going on... he just told me i didn't pass emission visible smoke coming from tail pipe and other related emission so i have no idea what I'm going to do i just lost my job a week ago and still looking for a new job the only money i have left on me is for the new registration witch is $127 i paid $44 for the test and didn't pass.

i was looking into getting a rebuild kit but i don't have the money for it right now due to not having a job at the moment my friend is going to try and help me out with seeing if it is the turbo if their is any shaft play or and thing else related to it being blown i read on here that it could be the head gasket seal too witch I'm hoping its not because i know its a lot of work and time and money to do.my friend said i should install my 16g that i brought from him if all else fails and i don't have a job soon to repair it but my cousin told me he don't think it will pass smog because it might run too rich witch my car is already running rich from what i was told at the smog testing so I'm running out of options anything info or advice that could help me i would appreciated

There are many things that can cause smoke out the exhaust, both blueish and white. To narrow it down, if you have reason to suspect the turbo going out on you, check it for shaft play, if the compressor wheels contacting the housing at all, and any oil in either the exhaust or compressor side of the housing or IC piping.

If the turbo is ruled out of the equation as for the cause of the smoke, I would start by running a few tests...do a cylinder compression test, check your oil/coolant, look for signs of any mixing of the two, boost leak test, and (I dont know the history of your car or how it was maintained when saying this), but if its never been done, run a seafoam treatment through the gas/oil/vac lines, possibly check out the injectors see if they could be partially clogged, the list goes on really. So many things can play a part in causing something to cause the smoke to be honest. Start with the most likely, work your way down. Worst comes to worst, since they were assholes at the place you had it tested, go back and bi*** and try to get more info on what they think it could be.

Not necessarily, some of the things I mentioned could have a slim chance of being the issue, like I said it all depends on the condition of the car/motor, how its been ran, how well its been maintained, any mods done, etc. The list I gave you was just off the top of my head like I said theres a vast number of things that could cause smoke. You said blueish AND whiteish in your OP I believe, if it is blueish more so than whiteish then that can narrow it down to being something oil relatedish.

Just start at what you think is most probable, then work your way down.

so today i did a check with my friend on my car the compression was ok so my friend said it cant be the head gasket seal so we took the stock air intake out for the turbo we found oil inside and on the upper hose next to the bov i forgot what its called ? but it was oil inside that too so we found out it was the turbo the blades look pretty bad :( clean oil inside getting trap inside causing it to burn

so my only other option to do is swap the turbo out with my 16g that i was holding off until i get the rest of my supporting mods i have no other ideas or money at the moment since i lost my job I'm a little worried if this will even pass with this swap but my friend said its worth a try so i was going get some new spark plugs and new air filter and maybe some sea foam maybe not sure yet but i have until this week to make a finally decision.... anyone know if this will work or will it not pass by swapping the turbo out

ya i would say just swap turbos out and see. let us no how it goes for you

so i did the swap with my friend and so far no leaks at all now everything seems like it went pretty well besides one thing my friend forgot to tighten one of the clams for the water and coolant line:ohdamn: thank god we caught it in time or else it would of over heated my friend check under the car notice their was water dripping so we just tighten it seems ok now

my buddy was thinking about taking it to a different smog shop or waiting for at lease a couple weeks to take it back to them since i got the extension maybe they'll forget what it previously look like also because they might pop the hood and see that it looks different then the last time i came i think they might not pass me they'll see a chrome heat shield and the blue cuppler that I'm using for the j-pipe to the side mount and the previous owner of the 16g polish the turbo LOL so its shinny now:D not sure if they'll trip over it so my idea and my friend was to wait a lil bit to be safe

If they are going to charge you again if you go back to the same place, then just go to a different one. Maybe the guy was just having a bad day the day it was first tested, or maybe hes an asshole who hates life and import/tuner cars and...eh you see where I'm going with it LOL. Just saying if it was me, I'd go somewhere else unless it was getting retested for free.

Lol, make up something ridiculous and tell them its an "Eco-friendly" turbo that you got from the Mits. dealer, and it will reduce the emissions of your vehicle to near nothing, and is incredibly fuel efficient. :thumb:

But on a serious note, I agree with ktgurl. Came factory turbo'ed, needs one to run. Yours was bad, so you replaced it with one that is made to work for your car. Doesn't matter if its different than the OEM, unless its messing with your emissions.

Im not sure about cali smog standards but from what I understand u have a visual test and a odb2 test(not the sniffer test for odb2).From your post I know you didnt pass the visual for oil burning.I would deff go somewhere else (only if you have no visible smoke) After swapping the turbos if there is still smoke i would look into your valve seals.I have a extra t25 turbo here with no hot side i would let you have for shipping only if you need.

Hey robs gst...not trying to be "that guy" to butt into someone else's thread and take an item that was offered for free to them, but if the OP doesn't want it, I'll take it off your hands. :sneaky:

yeah they are going to charge me again the price was $55 if i pass but i didn't pass so it was $44 since i didn't pass and to retake it...it's going to be $25 .so im kind of shooting for taking it somewhere else since like you said the guy is either a jerk or was having a bad day either way he shouldn't have been like that !

thanks dude so i haven't seen any smoke yet but that was last nite so i gotta see how it goes today

LOL yeah i could tell them that LOL it is factory turbo'ed like you said so they shouldn't give me any problems everything still stock right now just turbo replace

I don't know why it would be such a huge deal to them that you have a new turbo on there. It's factory turbocharged, it needs one to run. Just call the 16g a 'stock replacement.' :D

:D:thumb: yup

so today i finally pass i took the car and went to a different smog shop in Bakersfield called ace smog shop the guy was a Russian guy he was cool as hell he told me to use a heavier oil weight 50 weight and buy this stuff called no smoke witch you can buy at auto zone. i change the oil on it made a big difference just a little puff of smoke came out while idling but before it was a big cloud of smoke .he let it warm up and started the test and it pass :thumb: so i went straight to the DMV and got my tags today I'm so happy and no more stress for now on im going to be using a heavier weight until i get all my seals replace witch i'm going to get done sometime in the summer.

im going to buy a whole kit so it wont smoke anymore the piston rings are worn out everything was all original from the car so its time for a rebuild.im going to change all the seals and timing belt witch i already have the new belt ready when the time comes but it should be a good running car after that's done then i can buy all my mods and get it tune :hellyeah:

Glad to here you passed man, I was going to say that your 16G should have no problem passing even with a blue coupler. Sometimes you got to take some charge and let them know it's stock. Even if it's not you know more about your car then the smog tester (for the most part)

Congrats man. I have taken a few cars to that Guy at ascertain smog. He USA cool guys and helps out no problem

thanks man :)
