Turbo Clutch in Non Turbo Tranny?

will a turbo clutch work w/ my non turbo motor and tranny? i got the turbo flywheel, and a power torque clutch by zoom.

If ur replacing the Clutch AND flywheel with Turbo Stuff you should be fine. but Ive never done it, Wait for someone else to chime in on this.

NO! The turbo clutch and flywheel is bigger in diameter. Therefore it will not fit inside the bellhousing of a non turbo tranny. To use the turbo clutch and flywheel you will have to use the turbo tranny. Hope this helps.

its slightly thicker, but not bigger around wheres the proof? all fwd flywheels 2.0 are the same diamator awd is different

yea thats what i was thinking, if the bell housings were a differnt size, how would it bolt to the block.

i'm pretty sure the T clutch will work in the NT tranny.
i dont see why it wouldn't

Probably because I've aready tried it Smarty pants. The N/T tranny hits the clutch way before it gets against the block. The turbo clutch and flywheel are much thicker. I had to put a N/T flywheel and clutch on with the N/T tranny. Do you think I'd post if I didn't know. Go ahead find out the hard way like I did. Also I didn't say the bell housing bolt spacing was different did I. I said the bell housing was smaller on the N/T tranny, As in not as deep.
For your information, the N/T clutch is a 200mm. A turbo clutch is 225mm. Almost an inch bigger.
Sorry about the diameter thing, I had to think back 6 years ago when I did this back in the good Ol' FWD days.

Wow, thanks for clearing that up for me. My tranny is shot and I thought about replacing it with one from a fwd 91 TSI tranny, that would fit on my NT with the NT clutch setup correct?

the turbo clutch and flywheel combination will absolutely not fit inside a 1g nt manual transmission bellhousing. anyone saying any different is obviously un-educated and has never had any first hand experience with this. if anyone would like to argue this point any further i will go and grab pics of my old bellhousing i tried this on and you can see where the teeth of the flywheel hit the bellhousing and where the clutch bolts locked up against the inside of it as well.

the turbo flywheel has an offset step for it so that the pressure plate mounts above the surface of the flywheel whereas the nt flywheel is completely flat on the surface side and the pressure plate mounts directly to the friction surface.

i get really sick and tired of people throwing around info about something they obviously know nothing about. if you don't know for a fact, then don't just throw out your best guess, it helps noone.

yes, and you'll love the longer ratios that will end up slowing your car down.

oh you're doing the turbo engine swap? i did it and i'm actually loving the shorter nt ratios. plus if i damage my tranny there's like 30 at the local junkyard i can get for $300 a piece with a 30 day warranty.

If I could find a good replacement nt tranny for my car with a warranty I would get it, but I've only been able to locate a turbo tranny with warranty in my area. The junkyards around here says as is. what to do?

I'm sure you did. The diameter and the bolt pattern is all 100% the same. The difference lies in the depth of the bellhousing. Compare the flat flywheel of the 2.0 NT 4g63 to the stepped Turbo 4G63 flywheel and you'll find that the clutch itself extends about an inch deeper into the bellhousing than the non-turbo clutch will because of that stepped turbo flywheel. This is what causes the issues. It's been 13 years since I last replied to this thread, but I'm pretty sure nothing has changed with the internal dimensions of the factory bellhousings in that time period.

In the end, contrary to some of my other comments here, I got tired of shearing the teeth off of 3rd gear in the NT trans (went through like 3 or 4) on the little 14b and moved up to a fwd turbo trans and had much better success and was able to run a proper clutch.

I got a depth of 4.5 " with both. I also measured both clutch flywheel assembly and they were both the same height. I'll double check over the weekend but I went so far as to lay the awd clutch and flywheel on the tob of the nt trans and spin it. It was below the open face of the bell housing mounting flange and was still able to turn.

Edit: thank you for coming back to respond . I know what you mean about the turbo trans being better but I'm just trying to use a lighter flywheel on a non turbo. So I probably won't break it.

What do you mean about the lighter flywheel?

You're going to kill third gear over time with a basic 14b setup. Trust me. I killed multiple.

I'm not talking about overall depth. I'm talking about the depth at which the overall inner diameter from the face of the bellhousing back into the "bell" portion. The Turbo housings are larger deeper into that 4.5" to give clearance for the larger flywheel and clutch combination. It's not much, but it's enough. I was able to bolt the nt trans onto the block with the clutch in place, but was unable to turn the engine over because the clutch was touching the inside of the trans and had made marks in the aluminum as I tightened the bolts down.
