Ive realized that Ive been driving around without a cotter pin in the wastegate, what are the pros and cons of this?
Do I really need a cotterpin in there?
Turbos the 14b, and the wastegate is stock

the actuator rod can work its way off the wastegate arm and then you will build no boost. there is nothing that can blow up from this really, you just will basically have a non-turbo car.

the turbo just keeps building pressure and blows out the turbo seals. also u can blow a head gasket like that. just check for oil in the compressor if there is alot of oil in there then rebuild it or upgrade. happened to my whifes 14b on her civic.

no that's what happens if you disconnect the boost line going to the actuator. I had the same thing happen cause I was lazy and figured it would take a long time for it to work off. even just use a paper clip to hold it on til you can get a decent pin.

i disconnected my wastegate line on my mr2 and thankfull the knock control kept everything good, but when it retards timing, exhaust gets HOT and it warped my manifold and popped studs out of the head. after that i learned to used a boost controller.

LOL, thanks alot everyone,
off to the home depot. anyone know of a good size cotter pin to work with?

well then your wastegate was seized shut. if the wastegate flapper is just left to flap around the exhaust will open it on its own and you will build little to no boost. i would say get a kit of them. but something small like 1/32" in diameter should work.

I actually bought my 16G when I thought my 14B was blown one day when it suddenly quit making any boost. Turned out the wastegate actuater rod slipped off cause there wasn't any cotter pin in it. Just throw a paper clip in there, it's not like theres a lot of pressure or weight it needs to hold.

1/16"x 1" on the cotter pin. yes it was seized and yes i had a huge dent in the wastegate. the guy had no cluse what he was doing when he made the diy turbo kit. i have fixed almost everything to make the new turbo and system run right.
