I am getting ready to install a GM Maf with maft translator version 2.01 on my 1G. I want to continue to tune with my safc only and was wondering what the base settings should be on the maft. Thanks

Someone has to know...I'll be starting up the car tonight. All I am planning on doing to the maft is setting it to emulate a 2g maf since that is the connector I am using on my 1G.

Believe it or not, you should do ALL of your base tuning with the MAFT, the directions come with it. You need a logger if you don't have one allready to make things a lot easier. Then do your fine tuning with the SAFC. I do not have one at all and mine runs PERFECT now. I do have a custom eprom to help though.

For some reason I hafto richen my idle like 5-6clicks to the right for it to even idle  I have 680's too! Why would I hafto add so much fuel.

I agree if you dont have a logger you should get one before even messing with the maft.

I've got a logger. I am use to my old 5 knob style safc. To me that seems much easier even after reading the instructions for tuning with the maft. So are there any settings for the maft to run the gm mass only and all tuning be done with the safc? Thanks for the reply by the way.

You can zero out the MAFT with no problem and tune purely with the AFC and a logger. Just set the base fuel trim on the MAFT to whatever compensation your injectors add, then tune the rest with the AFC and leave everything else on the MAFT at 0. It's a lot easier than tracking down tuning problems because you have to remember "okay so when I go up to 500Hz in this gear at this RPM, my MAFT is doing one thing and my AFC another. Baseline for the injectors with yout MAFT, tune with your AFC. You'll be happy. :D

Holy crap! I have been looking for that answer since last Friday.
Here are a couple of pics. Because of the custom piping I had I had to locate both the gm maf and bov a little further down the intake pipe then I would have liked. Hopefully, it wont cause a problem. (I still have to clean up the wiring etc...)

So all I am gonna do with the maft is set it to read 750cc injectors and everything else gets zero'd out. Thanks man.

Where are you going to mount the MAFT? I'm getting mine in this week and I'm still looking for a place to mount it

FYI...I tried running the mass to compensate for 750cc injectors but the car was so lean it was terrible. It would not run...I couldnt even get a reading on my a/f gauge. The only way to get it to run decent was to set up the maft to read stock injectors (450cc) and add 1 value to the idle switch. With that it idled almost perfectly. I could free rev it to 3 or 4k and it would come back down to a nice idle even with my 8lb fidanza.

Side Note: I did not hook up the white rpm wire or the purple wires off the maft. I think I read somewhere these did not need to be hooked up if I an gonna tune with an afc. Secondly, for some strange reason my data logger (palm IIIe) would not log any values. It would show as being connected but the rpm, trims, timing etc were logging but with no associated numbers. So I could not log any fuel trims. I was thinking this was because the rpm wire was not connected off the maft. Can any one comment on these issues? Thanks

Those 2 wires are optional. I didn't hook mine up either.

I was having NO airflow readings when I first installed the MAFT. I fiddled around with the connectors on both the stock maf side and GM maf side to see if connections were fine. Lo and behold my CEL went away and I had airflow readings on my logger.

I ziptied the connectors to each other to furthur secure them.

I am getting no CEL's and I did check the connections on both ends. Actually, I am kinda shocked about how well the car is idleing with the new set up (750cc's, 56 trim turbo, Maft w/ Gm maf) I expected a ton more issues. I guess they will come when I actually drive it :) Back to my data logger; again it shows as being connected and I can see it logging however there are no numbers present. Not only that but some of the text on the screen is cut out...for instance...the "Preparing Log" text is only half way visible. Half of the wording is missing from the bottom of the word. I hope my logger didnt crap out...I need it now more then ever! OMG

I never had any logging issues with the thing, and I used both the scantool/digitool, and a pocketlogger (MUCH better).
The RPM wire IS optional and won't affect anything except your ability to use the RPM-based WOT tuning feature. The purple wire is never used if I remember right.
To get mine to idle with the right trims I needed to set my MAF to 3.5" even though it's 3". I couldn't adjust any lower than the 450cc compensation for my 550s, and it still was running super rich. It's behaving now.

On a side note, why does it look like you've got an absurd amount of room in your engine bay? I noticed the lack of cruise. When I put my MAF in I ended up with MUCH less room. Must be a 1g thing :D

I removed everything that wasnt needed. I was able to get my car down to exactly 2700lbs...2895 with my fat behind in it. Anyhow, before I open another thread in the "newb" section I found something that disturbed me greatly this evening. As I mentioned before I was able to get my car to idle fairly well lastnight by setting up the maft to read stock injectors and by having the idle knob of the maft set to 1. Well, I got my logger working tonight and logged it while at idle. I noticed it was very lean according to the O2 trim. It was hovering around 120-125% which, if I remember correctly, was full lean for a 1G. Anyhow, I noticed that when my brother covered the (stock & unmodified) bov with his hand that the car would immediately richen up. The O2 trims with the bov outlet would hover in the 70% range. So, I assume this bov is leaking. Can anyone explain this? This is the first time I am able to vent the bov to atmosphere and I am not sure how it should behave. It seems very wrong to me that just be covering the bov outlet it would richen up the car by almost 50%???? I do have vacuum going the bov, is this incorrect? Should it not have vacuum? This is freaky since the bov is before the GM maf and I would have figured it would be able to compensate. However, with 750cc injectors my idle adjustment should be at 10-15% negative   I guess this bov was causing me problems from day one. Can anyone comment on this?
