where does the extra mph come from w/ a taller gear?? higher rpm? broader powerband? no body has really answered this question yet.

Have you ridin a multi-speend bicycle? Notice how there are gears of varying sizes. Try doing 40mph with largest gear. It' isn't possible. It would take way more revolutions than you could possibly create.
Now switch into that tiny, gear, it'll be a #@%#@%#@%#@%#@% to start off in, but once you get going, you can haul ass.

That is the easiest way for "me" to visualize gearing.

Yuor transmission has nothing to do with you powerband or how many rpm's you should shift at. The extra mph comes from the taller gear that it nothing more to it.

i was thinking of buying a brand new awd tranny from tre with all these options:

GVR-4 1st gear & input shaft,
TRE-spec DOUBLE SYNCHRO 3rd/4th GEARSET, (shift @ 9000rpm)
MAX SPEED 5TH gearset, 25% taller
TRE-spec EVO III shift forks w/ Bronze wear pads,
TRE-spec steel shift rails,

now my biggest reason for getting a new tranny is better shifting and relability...if im making somewhere in the range of 300-350hp or so...will this tranny setup (with minimal hard shifting) be worth the money and last long enough? appreciate any input....

I have real close to the same transmission. I do have the 2nd gear double synchro and do not the taller 5th gear. I would not recommend the 5th gearset unless you are looking to go really fast or better fuel mileage. I did notice the difference with the GVR 1st gear and would recommond it plus the input shaft is supposed to be stronger. As for relability it should last you a very long time. There are people running 520+ hp on the stock trans with no problems yet. One more thing if you are making only 300-350hp there should be no need to shift at 9000 rpms.

Just posting my experience with TRE and my tranny.

Customer Service =

Jon was informative about the tranny and parts. And was a nice guy to talk to (when I could even get ahold of them). Took 5 months to get my tranny back. Something about my tranny being misplaced during thier move. I do accept the delay when they had to move shop, that was ok. But when they told me for weeks on end my tranny was getting done and being shipped, only to find out 3 weeks later they had me confused with someone else and my tranny sat in a junk pile. But soon after that they got it done and shipped it out.

Tranny = :dsm: :thumb:

I had the works done to mine.

EVO shift forks w/ new brass sliders
billet 2/3 gear set
New double synchros throughout
Galant vr4 input shaft and 1st gear
larger 5th gear
billet rails and caps
and all the other odds and ends

All I can say is WOW!!OMG What a difference. I was worried in the beginning while running the 85W tranny fluid for the first 1000 miles, but when I changed to BG synchroshift, the fun began. I run the Quaife unit in my AWD and it was a devil on the stock gears, but is holding up great now. And to me, the VR4 first gear made a LARGE improvement over stock. 60' times are now mid-high 1.6's on Dunlop SP5000. The shifting is smooth also and can bang gears like you should be able to.

With basically a complete rebuild and the works...it was about $2000 even. One of the best modifications I have done to the car. Now I don't have to worry "as much" about breaking the tranny and can have more $$$ for other mods instead of fixing the tranny.

Just my 2 pennies....

Man, that is so true! If anybody has tranny trouble near stock, just imagine what happens when you increase torque and HP. It makes sucj a HUGE difference when you can actully get that power to the ground, especially in a fwd. We have enough troubles as it stands.

I just ordered a spool from tre, I recieved it very quickly 3 days i think. I looks nice, just like a minispool for a rearend. I hope it works good once I get it installed!!

For the last two months or so I had been looking at getting a race transmission. When deciding between BM Tranny (cheaper) and TRE (a lot more expensive) I decided to go with Jon @ TRE. Everything I read about the guy and his trannys was incredible and was reaffrimed after actually talking to him about the tranny. I ended up paying $700 more then what I would have if I went though BM however I belive Jon's trannys to be superior and I like his upgrade options better.

The set up I chose was:

Remanufactured Tranny - $1800
Speed Design Four-Spider Diff - $450
Evo 1/2 Shift forks - $50
10% Taller 5th Gear - $150

Also added an EGT probe for $45.

His customer service skills were outstanding (I would know, I work for T-Mobile) and he fully answered all of my questions and did a lot of explaining. We should be putting it in on a week and a half from now; Jon says the tranny will be ready to ship this week.

Glad to hear the Costumer Service has improved. As for it was :barf: from my experience. But I will say again, the tranny is TOP NOTCH. GL bro with the tranny!:D

I wouldnt really pay for the GVR4 1st gear. I have it, but I have the JDM trans so it came stock. It IS noticeable for me, 6mph is more than you think in our 1st gear, and it makes it easier to get in 2nd bc youre going faster. But whatever, Im rebuilding mine right now but I am not getting the double synchro 2nd bc ive never had a problem getting it in 2nd ever. Everyone else I would reccomend it though! If I had the money id DREAM to get the double synchro 3-4th gear. Shift like butter into 3rd and 4th.

Taller 5th is quite posibly the dumbest thing Ive ever seen. If someone gets that, your are an idiot. Going from 4-5th is bad enough with the AWD gearing, imagine going 2500k rpm lower? NO POWER!!! NO TORQUE!

Def get shift forks upgraded and rails!

[officespace] ummm, well, i just might have to disagree there. yeah. hmmm [/officespace]:p

You statement couldn't be any more false, but, I will give you the benefit of doubt because you didn't state "WHICH" taller 5th. The 15% taller 5th should have been in the GSX the entire time!!!! (the 15% taller gear TRE is FROM a STOCK GST tranny).

Now the EXTREME 45% (?) taller gear is getting a little large (was this the one you were talking about?). It would take at least 400whp to use this gear for what it was meant for. Not saying you couldn't use it at all, just using the potential of it.

The GST taller gear is a very worthwhile mod in my book. Less RPM (noise) while cruising the interstate, BETTER gas mileage, pulls much smoother to me(subjective statement), and allows for a slightly higher speed.

Only downfall I find with my GST 5th gear, is rolling at 55mph up a hill in 5th requires a little downshift sometimes depending on grade, but other than that, it isn't a radical change from stock.

Yes, sorry for not being specific, I did mean the radical one, I think its really stupid :D

I just dont see the point at all with a taller 5th gear, who wants to race to 180+mph? Also, who said DSMs are set up to go that fast. Porsche's Ferrari's and all them have special ground effects and are MADE to go that fast. Ours are meant for tops 150. Id think about that before I went any faster.

I agreed about the Extreme 5th gear being a waste of money unless you run on the salt flats with 500+ hp. Aero becomes the #1 factor at high speeds.

But I do see the GS-T's 5th gear as an good option for the GSX's. A few extra mph's never hurt plus the improved gas mileage and quiter cabin.

Now that I agree with! :thumb:
