Transmission sudden failure

I have no experience with transmissions but I will have after this.Last night I drove about 3 miles and there was a grinding noise and the car felt like it was being held back so I drove back to my brother inlaws and the tranny was dripping by the transfer case side seal,I drained the fluid and about half was gone,and the fluid that was left was copper colored and had metal in it.It looks like I need to find a low priced used tranny in northwest indiana because we are stuck here until I do.How long does it take to replace a awd tranny?Anyone have one?Thanks

try looking on chitowndsm.com it will probably take 8 hrs to do a r+r if youve never done it. good luck man.

It could be the infamous t case leak/recall from the manufactures.

Got a pic exactly where it leaks?

Its coming from the tranny,I know what you are talking about,I got the recall done 5 years ago and it held up.Thanks anyways

Where exactly on the trans?

Tranny wont shift gears/go into gears, notchy, grinds? etc... any probs before this?

Its leaking up between the transfer case and the tranny I will check it out better tomorrow,It shifts into all gears but now clunks when drivin, and off and on grinding.The only previous problems were grinding when shifting into first gear.

I also have been having cent. differential problems,inside tire skipping and car would drag turning slowly in a parking lot.

Replaced the tranny,The old one chewed up the bearing where the right axle goes into the tranny & tore up the seal,.half the ball bearings were gone.The only problem I ever had was the first gear would grind so about 2 months ago I used gm synchromesh and it did not help at all.
