My cars been grinding first and second gear for about a week now.. just getting progressively worse, I had planned on changing the gear oil tomorrow but now that doesnt seem necessary..

I just tried to take it for a drive, got to the end of the street and grinded it into first, then as i tried to shift into second, the shifter just got a lot of slop in it and now it appears to be stuck in second gear.. however the shifter its self still moves straight up and down, with a whole lot of play, but not side to side.. its dark and cold out so I cant do anything now.. and ideas what happened?

I would first check to see that the shifter connections under the hood (on top of the transmission) and on the base of the shifter itself are solid and without play. Once you check that, report back and we'll try to help you further. Hopefully that is your problem and it'll be a cheap and easy fix.

I found this to be the problem..

I hooked it back up and it shifts into every gear now.. I changed out the castrol hypo c and put synchromesh in.. just drove it around the block once, and it still grinds, ill let it marinate and see what happens. Its like when I try to put it into gear slowly, i can almost feel the teeth.

Not a bump, I swear.. but this linkage.. could it be causing my transmission to grind / make it hard to put into gear? Ive been reading some search items, but cant really figure out if there is a way to adjust this. I assume that there is a way to attach this better than just putting the pin through the hole, there has to be something to make it stay on better so it doesnt pop off again..

also, when pushing in the clutch with the car off, I can hear a faint pinging noise, sounds like a spring in the clutch. Is it possibly not disengaging fully and causing my 1st / 2nd / reverse grind.. can that also be adjusted?

Manual DSM trannys suck. They're notorious for destroying the 2nd gear synchros really quickly. Personally, I cannot downshift into 1st at all. I must come to a complete stop before it slips into 1st, no exceptions. I also have the wonderful slipping into R by pulling hard on the shifter and letting out the clutch slowly, and the little "catch grind" going into 2nd from either 1st or 3rd. I'm probably going to have to break down and drop the cash for a rebuild soon.

Your cable should leave enough of the shift lever sticking out to slide a cotter pin through the lever.

I don't know what shape your clutch is in, however pinging noises are never a good thing no matter where they come from. I think if it was a clutch issue that you'd have trouble shifting at all, not just 1st, 2nd and R.

Yea, Im leaning more towards the shift linkage at this point. I found it in the VFAQ, go figure. LOL

Thats definitely the side to side one that popped off, so I think I either need to adjust it or get a new linkage setup.. cheaper and quicker than dropping the trans, so I guess Ill try that and report back.
