I am finishing the rebuild of my transmission. I got the main cover on, etc. I shifted into a gear where I couldn't spin them with my hand, in order to tighten the 2 36mm locknuts. It would spin freely with a socket wrench, though. I got the nut on the 5th gear stack on, torqued to 109 ftlbs, and noticed that it wouldn't shift anymore. Both shift levers are sort of locked in place. What the hell did I do wrong?! They will still spin easily with a socket wrench on the 36mm nut.

THANKS!

To resolve this thread -
We dropped the tranny and took it apart. One of the conical bearings on the differential (passenger side) was pitted and scratched, and there was a bunch of metal shards jammed under the 2 shims next to the bearing's outer race. Cleaned everything up, pressed the old bearing off, noticed that it had spun at some point, measured it (it was true and circular and the bearing was .001" smaller, i.e. still a press fit), pressed the new one ($34 from Mitsu) on, reassembled. We also pulled all the other gear stacks to look for damage. None was found. My guess is that the shards came from Reverse... it was the only damaged gear I found. We put it back in today and things seem fine, no more noise of death, just some small clutch adjustment issues that I hope I can resolve tomorrow. So now I know the tranny pretty well. Any questions, just shoot me a PM :D

MORAL: DON'T GRIND INTO REVERSE!

WTF. I realized today that I didn't really resolve the thread at all. THE REASON WHY IT WAS LOCKED: I was playing around with the shift levers before I put in the lock (roll)pin for the 5th gear shift fork. So the lever popped out of place, and got jammed there when I tightened the 36mm nuts inside the end cover. Taking it back apart, aligning everything back up, and assembling it properly fixed everything. DO NOT shift gears when reassembling the transmission or it will happen to you too! My car is back!!!!! :D
