Transmission empty, bone dry

Wow I was just going to drain my transmission, which uses a 19 MM wrench for the fill bolt, and a 17mm drain bolt. I got the drain bolt off, and not a drop came out! Strange thing is my transmission was working fine when I last drove the car. Car's been sitting about 4 years. There is a film of oil, bot nothing came out. It was Redline MT90 or something like that, I forget now what it was it been so long.

Anybody else found their transmission dry and it didn't break down?

Even if it didn't break down, the wear on bearings would be substantial.
On a side note are you sure you took the right plugs off? I could've sworn on a 1g the drain plug is 24mm and the fill is 17mm, correct me if I'm wrong

Fixed that for you.

Your transmission was DEFINITELY experiencing a very accelerated wear situation if you had no gear oil in there.

Drain plug is not a 17mm. You took off the wrong bolt.

Alright; thanks everyone...I noticed the transmission also has a 199MM bolt/plug on top of the transmission, what is that bolt for then. the 19MM on top?

I can't remember what that thing is for. Don't worry about it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the OP was referring to a five speed and not the Auto as the other article states

The drain is the huge flat head bolt on the bottom at the end cover (furthest to the wheel). If that wasn't what you took off, then you took the wrong bolt off. There are bolts that hold the linkage, the fork rods and the reverse gear assy so make sure you're removing the correct one.

When we bought by girlfriends 1G and I got it running I idled it a few times before I realized the brand new shep trans it came with had no fluid in it. My stupid fault for not checking it before starting the car but it has been fine. And that trans had supposedly been sitting for a while. So if you do pull the right plug and there is still nothing in it then I wouldn't be too concerned.

Ok I found the correct plug and it looks like a few quarts came out of it.
