Transmission bearings?

Since I took my car out of storage in May, it's been making a funny howling noise coming from the front passenger side whenever the car is in gear and moving. When I let off the throttle and it starts to coast, the noise gets louder and when I step on the throttle it gets louder. The sound is not very noticeable when there is little power/force applied to the car in either direction. The sound doesn't seem to change pitch with RPMs but I have a loud exhaust so I might be missing it... OMG The really interesting part happened tonight: I was coasting at about 5 mph when I tried putting it into 1st gear. Since it wasn't in gear, there was no sound but when I got it half way into gear (past the synchros I guess?) it sounded almost like a bad bearing going from not spinning to spinning, then the usual grinding/spinning sound mentioned above.
What does this sound like to all of you ladies and gents?

Check to see that there is enough oil in the transmission first. If there is then drain the oil and see how it looks. Then replace it with new Synchroshift/Synchromesh and see if its still makes the noise. When my trans went bad it was making the same kind of noise you are describing, except mine was speed dependent. When I drained the oil, it was almost silver.

It probably wouldn't hurt to check your transfer case oil as well, just in case.

Monday night I drained it because I took the cover off to make sure that the two 36mm bolts were tight, and the oil looked dark but not silver. I intend to have the trans rebuilt this fall/winter so I hope it all holds up until then! :coy:

I'd like to see you do some more diagnostics. Finding a deserted road with a grade you could try turning the engine off and coasting. You could try different gears while depressing the clutch which might help isolate where and which possible bearing are involved. On properly placed jackstands you can have the car running and in gear while checking with a stethoscope and other listening tools.

I'm curious as to why you make the statement of having the tranny rebuilt, did you have prior issues before the time-out?? This is not the time for improper diagnosis, if necessary get a reliable professional opinion before tossing out that 4 digit repair only to find out a $20 bearing would have solved it. It's impossible to guarantee reliability of something not seen or heard from just a word description for sounds are so subjective and dependant on past experiences.

Cheers,
GTM

I was thinking rebuild because I am having some issues: pops out of first gear from a stop (intermediate shaft bearing according to searches on this site I think?), and 3rd gear synchro seems bad because every time I shift with a bit of effort it will grind.
