Searched a little and couldn't really find anything that helps. So the 92 TSI I bought last month that iv been cleaning up and fixing odds and ends is finally running alright. I noticed today though when messing around under the hood that I have a 4 pin TPS sensor. My question is will it make a difference on the car that is has a 4 pin and not the stock 3 pin that i believe it should have on it.

Is your car a 7 bolt built after june 92 ?
91 cars have a 3 pin and 2g cars have a 4 pin. Does your throttle body have the closed circuit switch on the TB up by the throttle cable? 2g dsm integrated both in one tps for that function.
I found this part number list for oem TPS
1990 MD614208
1991 MD614327
1992-1994 MD614510
1995-1999 MD614662
If your harness has the 4 wires in the connector then it must be that 1gb late 92-94 cars have a 4 pin tps but a different number. ill have to research more and check tps's i have in garage.

On a 1G the 2G TPS will work fine. The internal idle position switch will be ignored. All 2.0L 1Gs from the factory used an external IPS on the firewall side of the TB. Don't remember what the 1.8L used.

Regardless of which version of TPS, it needs to be set according to how the ECU is using it.

my car is a lucky one and got a 6bolt from the factory. it does have the sensor on the by the throttle cable and my plug that goes to my TPS sensor is just three wires. just thought it odd it had a 4 pin TPS sensor. IM still new to these cars and learning everyday haha.

Since the new part is interchangeable with the older part it's likely it was a service replacement.
Not as likely that it came off the line that way but possible since there were other cars using the same part at the same time before the 2G's came out. The 3000GT used the 4 pin TPS from the beginning.

Interesting... because i was surprised to find 2 different part numbers for the 4 pin tps. Makes sense now. Thanks for clarifying for us steve :thumb:

I don't know what I clarified since it's a little knowledge and a bit of speculation.
None of the 1G's used the 4 pin TPS with the integral IPS. If you check the factory manuals and CAPS all the 2.0L 1G engines had external IPS and the wiring harness that goes with.

It's very unlikely that any 1G came from the factory with a 4 pin TPS but the engines were made overseas and like the plant in Normal did from time to time, I sure if they ran out of the exact (lower cost) parts while they had a functional replacement on the shelf, they would put those parts on and ship the unit to make their quota.

Very few 1Gs exist today that are single owner, so the abnormal is more likely due to something that happened between birth and today that the current owner doesn't know anything about.

I know what the difference is between the 90 and 91+ TPS is but I don't know what's different between the MD614327 and MD614510 are or more importantly why the later part didn't supercede the former as usually is the case if the parts are 100% interchangeable.

Something to ponder if I ever have some free time.

Most if not all 92 should be 6 bolt also. Ive heard of a few 7 bolt 92 model year but never seen one. Think about it, since new models hit in fall how many months production have to happen to stock the dealers. Model year 93 built in may 1992 doesnt sound that far fetched.

The changeover happend mid-june 92, its quite possible the 7 bolt made it into 92s from mid june to maybe september. Your right though rare chance to find a 7 bolt 92..Im sure most 93 vin'd models went on sale in fall of 92.

Steve, these part number replacement does not make sense for the 1gb, but quite possibly it maybe a parts supply issue with an updated part number as you stated. I just wasnt sure if 1gb with 7 bolt had 3 pin or 4 pin harness connector

I just wasnt sure if 1gb with 7 bolt had 3 pin or 4 pin harness connector

All 1G 2.0L cars had an external IPS. The TPS connector from 1991 to 1994 on the 1G 2.0L cars had three pins used of the four positions in the connector. Pin 3 was unused which is where the internal IPS connects on the TPS with internal IPS. On the original 1990 2.0L cars a different 4 pin connector carried the TPS and IPS signals to the pigtail off the TPS and to the IPS on the backside of the TB. In 91 they switched to the new connector style and it wasn't until the introduction of the 2G that they eliminated the external IPS and used the same internal IPS style TPS as used on the 3000GT and other cars.

To the best of my knowledge, there was no change to the TPS, TPS wiring, or IPS on the 1Gb or 1Gb 7 bolt engine.

Back to the OP's question.

Just make sure that the TPS is adjusted correctly and outputs between 0.48v and 0.52v with the throttle closed, that the resistance changes smoothly with the changes in throttle opening. Also make sure the IPS is correctly grounding the green wire when the throttle is closed and not grounding it when the throttle is slightly opened.

Do you want to tell us why you were investigating the TPS in the first place, are you having a problem?
