not saying this is a great thing or anything just letting you guys hear about the top mounted intercooler on the 4g63

Top mounts arent good at all. Anyone here the phrase "Heat rises" the heat would go right to the intercooler. Thats why you see wrx and ford turbo coupes changing to front mounts. Even though they both have vents to direct cold air right on the intercooler it still sucks.

yeah and it looked pretty small, still looks like a crazy car..... tiptronic transmission....anyway thats possible on our 4g63?

Anything is possible...if you have the money. But I have always loved sunroofs and mitsu puts two of them on the montero.

the top mounted intercooler is a very bad idea. ur extremely limited as to how large the intercooler can be, therefor ur stuck to having a small intercooler, similar to a stock WRX. anyone have any clue as to how well it would flow on the car tho?

flow wouldn't be a problem. It's the heat that would make you loose power. if they were running an air to water intercooler it would make sense. Who's idea was it to run an air to air ic in the engine bay??

I would never ever run a top mount and if i had a car with one i would take it off. There is no way in hell that a topmount can cool as well as a front mount.

im glad we all agree on this...but why did mitsu even bother making it top mounted when they can just put a front mount on?

It flows as good as a similar sized sidemount or front mount. But it doesnt cool at all. My friend at school has a t-bird turbo coupe and the one with a smaller turbo than the t25 dosent cool enough. And the t3/t4 car he has could be about a second faster with a sizable sidemount or front mount.

then why are they even making top mounted intercoolers? seems like a waste of perfectly good engineers...mitsu should focus more on tranny strength then top mounts

Most subaru guy go to FMIC. Like eveyone says heat rises. It's a stupid way to engineer a IC IMO. Not to mention you can only put a smaller core on there. There is no way you could put a nice big size core on there. Don't even waste your time thinking about it. ;)

what if you wanted to have a daily driver but an occasional rally car, would your front mount get the crap kicked out of it?

just wondering if anyone else has done a top mount intercooler setup , and how how they did it, what kind of scoop they used etc. mine is in my profile i couldnt figure out how to add picture to post :|

Thats a good idea, but with out a good scoop right over it like on top of where u have yours, i would imagine it would get excessive heat bein so close to the engine with no air. I know the reason why cars like the sti use them is because they have horizontally opposed engines so they sit lower leaving more room for the IC. I think if u built a heat sheild and had a good scoop that it would be very neat and unique, as well as fuctioning IC

i would think you would need to modify your hood quite a bit to make it all fit along with piping. IMO it isnt worth the hastle of everything, or performance benefits if any unless you must have it to be different

yea i built a hood scoop on top of it and cut the hood out (profile pics) but i was trying to figure out how to block it off from the engine heat, aluminium sheeting maybe??
