I have a Pioneer DEH Head unit. I want to replace the Infinity system (no cd changer) in my 99 gst. Do I have to bypass the amp? Can I route my preamp outputs from my head unit to the inputs of the stock amp to get it working. If I bypass the amp is there some issues with the way the eclipse tweeters in in parallel with the door speakers (Ohms) for a direct connection to my head unit.

I have searched a answer but not a lot of info on how you have to connect either to the amp or over the amp.

Thanks,,

some guy at circuit city said u cant the new cd players are "pre-amplified" or whatever and have an internal one so u have to bypass the infinity amp and thats an extra charge for labor.....but thats what some guy workin on commision told me.....i dont know for shure but the most u could do is blow a few fuses....

you dont have to bypass it, but why wouldnt you? why buy an aftermarket quality head unit and run it thru your amp and get factory quality sound? its not the best idea to run 2 sets of speakers off of 2 channels ie. tweet and doors because your head unit isnt made to run at 2 ohms, but at the same time ive never seen any problems with that because they dont require much power but also the first thing to blow in the infintiy system is the tweets even with the factory amp, so put a hi power head unit on that and it wont be long before they bite the dust. another problem is that you cant run your preouts from the head to the amp, you have to run the amplified signal out the speaker wires to the amp which shortens the life of the amp significantly.
all in all your best bet is to bypass the amp. better sound and better reliability.

if that was unclear, bypass the amp because you pretty much have to, wire your tweets with your front doors, but dont expect the tweets to last long. when they blow invest in a cheap set of components and the sound quality will be much better than any factory system ever was

So you think its o.k. to just run the front tweeters with the door speakers on my head units front speaker outs? I am pretty sure it wont have an issue on the head unit side but wanted to see if the speakers were going to blow. I replaced the door speakers already with Rockfords but the tweeter is still stock.

Should I jump the amp starting at my head unit or should I connect to the amps harness and do the jumping at the amp end. Wondering if I should run new wires from the head unit or use whats there.

Any experience or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the info so far.

sorry i havent actually done it but i do know how just not in detail. what i am going to do and what is best for sound quality is run new wires to my doors and rears straight to the head unit, my tweets are blown and im not going to mess with them. if you can find the wires for the tweeters you can extend those and run them straight to the head unit also. as far as doing the actual bypass AT the amp, i dont know wire colors and locations and everything. it would probably be easier to catch the wires at the amp harness but look at the size of that wire. not much power can go through that tiny stuff but it does work.

as long as you know what wires are going into the amp and where they run coming out of it you can unplug the amp and jump the wires. thats probably the easiest route for you.

your stock tweeters will blow eventually when hooked up to an aftermarket head unit. guaranteed. its just a matter of time. new heads put out at least twice the power as factory. does that answer your questions. if not i'll be on a while just keep askin

You need to bypass the factory amplifier. You can purchase a "jumper" harness at a car-stereo shop. It's called an "adahead" or something like that. That is if you are going to use the stock speaker wiring at the stock harness plug. If you're going to run your own wiring, the stock amplifier is obviously not an issue. The stock Infinity tweeters are not going to blow with the Pioneer head unit. You're pumping out probably 15 Watts RMS out of that thing. I believe that stock tweeter has a crossover cap attached to it, so it should be ok. I'm running 45 watts RMS to the stock tweeters with no issues, but I am using my Quart crossover.

ive never seen any vehicle with the infinity system come in to the shop without at least one of the tweeters blown. but hey maybe thats why theyre comin in. mine are blown with the complete stock system.

but now that he mentions it, if you can find the bypass harness use that. i didnt think about that because we never carried them at ultimate.

They arent actually tweeters, they are 3 inch speakers. They blow out in most all of the infinity powered DSMs i have seen. I unplugged mine for the simple fact that they sucked in the first place. Circuit City and Best Buy should have those bypass units which you do need to do, w/ best buy probably having the cheaper price.

Well I went to Circuit City and Best buy and neither knows about the cable to jump the amp. I am going to call the local stereo places and see if they have any.

Thanks,

Michael

i just put my alpine in today. ran new wire to the doors and rears and left out the tweets. sounds so much better. next project: sub box in the spare tire space

Well I took the plung and installed my dec (Pioneed DEH-8400mp) into my car. Circuit City had sold me some universal plugs to attach to my head unit and my car. WRONG. The one for the car was fine but Circuit City doesn't even carry my head unit (too high end I figure. Best they had was a 6400).

Well I to hack the plug I got for the car and wired my plug into it. It went well and all the wires hooked up.

I then went to the amp and unplugged it and jumped the tweeters across to the front speakers there at the plug and they came alive. I put connectors on them so I could unconnect them if I thought they blew or sucked.

Note: You do NOT have to remove your shifter to remove the center console in a 2g gst. The Chilton manual says so but you don't have to since the PRND21 plate stays with the car and the console comes off.

Sounds good - Got to work on the staging some and see if I can't get it worked out. Already louder then I had before. Only thing is I couldn't use both antennas on the car with my head unit. It only has one input. Thought it would bee nice to shave the stick antenna off the car and use the one in the window for my head unit in the future. Don't really care for telescoping antennas.

Well thanks for all the help and take care.

Michael
