my cars timing has beeen off so i just ordered all the parts to change the timing belt and ect. so when i was driving home i looked at my logger because my car was running bad, i was getting crazy high knock counts 30+ and my timing was around 37 degs. just at 45/50mph in 4th or 5th gear. so what could make the timing all the sudden change? and would it be safe to drive to the shop which is about 20 min away from my house so i can do the timing

How do you know the timing is off? Are you looking at the logger or at the timing marks? The ignition timing on the logger is going to bounce all around at cruise. Just look at your ignition timing at wot pulls so there arent any dips.

To add on to what Gstclipse69 said: Also the ignition timing is a way different thing than the cam timing. The T-belt controls the cam timing, the only relation that has to the ignition timing is that the CAS is driven by the cam off the crank by the belt. I hope that makes sense

If your timing is off and your getting knock, dont just suspect it's your timing belt. But you should still check teh marks tobe sure it's lined up correctly. Or, if you're close to 60k miles nad haven't done it yet, you might as well do the belt anyway.

The knock you're getting is coming from some noise in the motor, wether it's knock orsomething loose that's rattlling enough to set off the knock sensor.

37* timing is pretty high, but under some light load cruising that's normal.

Without seeing/hearing your car run in person i can't make a decision on if it's safe to drive anywhere. but you can look it over, check the timing marks at home and if everything looks kosher you can make a judgement call from there.

yea, but my car has never had the timing on the logger that high and knock that bad, and it sucks i know if i just let someone ride or drive my car they could figure out what is wrong, but there are no dsm guys where i live everyone is honda :beatentodeath: how do i change ignition timing?

YOu loosen the CAS (cam angle sensor) on the back of the head and twist it while using a timing light to line up the marks on the flywheel. THere's more to is because you have to ground a wire that;s on the firewall to amke the ECU get you in the mode to set "base timing" It basically sets the timing to fire at a set time no matter what so you can adjust it to match that number on your timing light. then you tighten the CAS back down while watching the timing ( 2 people works best) and viola, it's done... I know i made it sound easy, but it's not hard really. I hate to sound like a million other posts but if you do a search on here you'll find tons of threads on how to set the timing on a 1g

yea i thought that was how to do it, but yea im changing my tbelt and water pump and the pullys and tbelt tensioner becuase i bought the car 4-1-08 and have no idea when the last time it was changed so it cant hurt to change it, and i bought new plugs too just to do a tune up. but do you think its safe to drive my car with the timing messed up so its getting high knock? i mean its like a 20 min drive to the shop were my brother works i use his lift and he helps me
