timing problems

I know that base timing is supposed to be set at 5* but i see that mine it bouncing between 3 and 9 at idle. I do have some significant mods but what can i do about this? is it ok or is it supposed to be steady at 5*? modifying fuel maps has no effect while the car isnt at WOT, the only thing i can adjust is the fuel pressure which is set to about 43psi w/o vacuum line attached and it drops to a little below 40 when i attach it. I could change the timing maps but because it changes while and a somewhat constant rpm, that wont help me.
Also while im just cruising in the 3k-4k rpm range timing hits 33* and stays there. Its not pulling timing so its not knocking, so is that ok? from what i understand it shouldnt get any higher then 19ish.

Have you had a logger on it? Did you check your o2 volts? Watch to see what they are doing in comparison to what your timing is doing. If it bounces around with the timing then you could possibly have a bad o2 sensor.

at idle the front o2 is supposed to be bouncing from lean to rich isnt it because it is open loop? it only stays constant at WOT when the ECU is in a closed loop. maybe i have the open and closed backwards.
