If this isn't the right place to post this mods feel free to move...

Okay a while back I went tostart my car and it sounded terrible.like I had no exhaust or something.anyways checked my timing to see my intake cam gear 5 teeth advanced...i go to turn the crank with no plugs in and it turns a little bit and then binds up.I just did a t belt and head 1500miles ago.I pulled the timing belt and auto tensioner off and then itcranked fine no binds. I turned all the gears and pulleys withthe belt off and they all turn fine without binding.what do you think happened?I must have did something wrong somwhere but I'm not sure.Jam going to try to retime it and compression test it to see if i bent valves...again!it skipped on startup so I hope it didn't bend anything again.

You never want to crank the motor with the timing belt off. This will cause the pistons to smack the valves because they are not in time and it is an interference engine.:toobad: If there was no binding when cranking the damage was probably already done. I bet you bent some valves.:(

Okay I have the tensioner off.I slowly compressed it in thevice and used a Allen wrench to pin it.when I pull the pin the pushrod shoots out reallyfast.if I'm correct that means the tensioner is bad?no?

No. The push rod is suppose to come out pretty quick. If it didn't come out then it would never put any tension on the belt. Then you would have a loose floppy belt all the time. And that's not good.

Yeah that was my thought also but I read somewhere that that meant it was bad? It says it should slowly come out but I thought having it come out fast would ensure it would pick up slack. Idk I'm confused.

It should be hard to compress, but it should extend quickly.

As the car sits it will start to compress, as soon as it cranks it extends. So what's better, cranking and having the belt take time to tension or cranking and having the belt tension instantly.

It sounds good to me. The problem may be how you had the pulley itself positioned.

I think I know what I did wrong.... I don't wanna say it. When I timed it last I didn't pin the tensioner. I just used a few turns on the special compresser tool. I should have checked that! idiot.... thanks for the help I don't have time to work on it tonight but tomorrow I think I will have her retimed and get a compression reading.

The way I tension them probably isn't the way to do it by the books, but it has worked well everytime and I have never had a belt slip.

I put a pin in the tensioner and bolt it into place. Then I thread in the pulley bolt, but leave it loose enough to where the pulley can still rotate on the bolt. Then I take a screw driver and push the pulley against the belt fairly hard so there is tension on the belt before the tensioner is released. Then I tighten the pulley bolt all the way so it stays in place, the I pull the pin.

It has never failed me, out of all the timing jobs I have done on random Mitsubishi's.

That's what I'm going to do but instead of the screwdriver I'm using the special tool and tq wrench and tourqing the belt tension to spec then I will release the pin. Thanks for the help I will report back whatever I find out.

Mjbean I know if you read my first post you will see I stated with the plugs out I hand cranked it... But thanks anyways.

So I got it timed and checked the compression...it had 40psi in number 4 so i just gave up.the motor doesn't sound like it's cranking over to fast really and my tester is old and junky so i will be trying another tester just to be sure. I like to think its a bad tester but I'm pretty sure its bad valves...fml. I'm debating on buying another remanufactured head or just having someone like Napa do them.i don't really trust a place like that though.
