Hey everyone, I recently just started up my 95 GSX (mods in profile) and it sounds like it has a droning whine around the timing belt area. I know it's not the accessory belts. My mitsu tech friend told me to tension the belt as much as possible by turning the tensioner pulley as tight as possible, and then torquing it down there. He said the auto tensioner should not move hardly any, if at all when you pull out the pin. So is the belt too tight? Will it hurt something? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

How do you know it's not the accessory belts? Also, How long has it been since the timing belt was replaced? When I did mine, I followed a procedure I found on this site (either VFAQ or searching forums) to do it without the tensioner tool. What I did was put the new tensioner on with the grenade pin in, then stuck a screw driver between the tensioner arm and the pulley and pushed down on the handle of the screw driver pushing the pulley up into my belt on my 1G until it was tight. I then torqued the tensioner pulley bolt down and released the tesnion from the screw driver. Next I checked to see if the pin would easily come out and go back in. It did, so then I rotated it counter clockwise a 1/4 turn and then clockwise 6 turns and waited 15 minutes and then checked to see if the grenade pin would again go back in easily all the while making sure my timing marks lined up perfectly. It did, so at that point it was considered to be correctly tensioned. This was all new timing gear though.

You can't really over tighten the belt since factory specify's to put the tensioner at maximum tension. It is probably something else whining. I would check and made sure it is rubbing on something though.

My motor was built 11000 miles ago. The T-Belt is so tight it sounds supercharged at idle LOL I have had no problems with it like that and as far as I can tell the belt looks healthy. My buddy just did his 1G timing belt he also made it very tight it whines too. GoodLuck. Hope this helped.

Yes, a timing belt that is too tight will drone. If it's not overly so, it will eventually stretch in. If you do it like VFAQ and several threads in here have suggested, it would not drone when installed. But I'd rather a little tight than a little loose.

As long as you replaced the auto tensioner.

Exactly. A bit over-tight will set right when the belt settles, and the pin should slide out and back in with no work needed to do so to show proper tension.

Hmm, I guess maybe I will drive the car for a little while and see if it quiets down a bit. You can slide the pin on the tensioner in and out easily, so I guess it is right. I'm just a little paranoid after sinking over 6k into the motor alone, so I don't want to take any chances. You know how it goes. But thanks to everyone for your very timely and helpful responses.

Don't worry, seen it many times and none of them have had a single problem... Let us know how it goes, but it should "break in" soon enough. Go have some fun with the car..
