toronto,
I found a 92 tsi fwd talon (6bolt :thumb: ) for sale with a messed up timing belt. The seals went bad I guess (real bad cause the belt is soaking wet) and slipped one or more teeth. What I'm wondering is if the valves and or pistons got messed. This is a deal in any case as the engine is a 6bolt, good tranny, 16g turbo, and a decent looking body. I work in a shop and plan to pull the engine out and work on it out of the engine bay (after doing a timing and seal job on a jack on my talon I have nightmares now).

What are the odds the valves and pistons are ok, the belt did not snap, the engines turns but does not start (turns without any aweful noises like valves hitting each other or the pistons).

Also, it's 700CDN bux, so I'm gonna take it regardless, just wanna know what kinda hole i'm digging :p

It's a DSM you will always be digging a hole. Either fixing things, wanting to make it faster and fixing things because it's faster. :p

Lol ok.
So, I'ma buy it anyways, it's like a car full of spare parts and a 6bolt w/ tranny all for 700 bux.

I'll keep u guys posted to how bad the engin got.

now your thinking straight. It's a possibility the valves are just fine. You won't know until you do a compression test on it. Wish you luck bro.

No it isn't. But, DSMs are possibly the most-abundant tuning car since the Model A, and heads are still cheap.
Hey not every car will have bent valves. My timing belt slipped a few teeth on the exhaust side and I heard the valves hitting the pistons. I tore the whole thing apart even though I had 155/145 compression across the board. Found out the pistons where fine and so was the valves. Ended up wasting a lot of time and about $200 in gaskets to tear apart a good motor. You break a timing belt yes you will have bent valves. You slip a timing belt you need to do a compression and leak down test their after to say you have bent valves.

But heads are cheap. I'm always looking for a cheap parts car.

My timing was off a few teeth after my tensioner pulley killed itself and the car wouldn't start. Valves and pistons did NOT touch. ( I have wiseco pistons which have very large valve reliefs though )

In the nine years that I've worked on DSM's I've never seen one survive a timing belt jump untill last week when I bought a 92 Laser. I want to say that around 30 degrees retarded, if the two cams stay in that position when the belt breaks, the pistons will clear the valves!!! I put a new timing belt on that sucker and sold it the next week!! But your chances are very slim to none. Like I said, in 9 years, in the 50+ timing belts that I've done, only 1 has survived!! Good Luck!!
