Im going to be doing a timing belt\water pump job on my 1g here preety soon cause my water pump went.. the motor has about 70,xxx on it... and im wondering if the parts im ordering will do the job... and if you guys think i will need anything else?? Im ordering an OEM timing belt OEM tensioner and an OEM water pump... i think as of now thast all that i should replace cause im kinda on a tight budget... do u guys think that will be alright??? and if not what other parts do u think i should get?? :thumb: :talon:

I'm not sure if it was implied when you said timing belt, but you should definitly order a new balance shaft belt. The idler and tensoiner pulley are also a good idea but they should still be in okay shape at 70K.

yeah i was kinda looking at a balance shaft belt too.. because i dont think i wanna get the balance shaft eliminator kit.
I would simply recommend a B.S. eliminator ONLY if you happen to have spun a bearing for them and have to go inside anyway. The B.S. belt, water pump, and tensioner should be fine, but personally I would do all of the timing components to be sure you are not doing it again in 15 to 30 k again.

-New Water pump and gasket
-New Timing Belt
-New Tensioner pulley
-New Idler pulley
-New Hydraulic tensioner

-Balance Shaft Belt
-Balance shaft pulley
(unless you're doing a BS removal then the last two aren't needed but you'll need the BS removal KIT instead)
Take my word for it, you don't want to skip parts even if in a tight budget, because you'll end up doing it twice or it may cost you more in the long run.

Are you doing all this yourself? or with the help of a experienced DSMer? or taking it to a shop? either way you gotta keep in consideration that in order to remove th BS if you decide to do so, it'll be a lot easier with the engine out or lowered a little to give you enough clearance for to work the oil pump and that shafts out of the block... its very tricky with the engine in place. Just a thought.

hey guys check this link out...http://www.thespeedfactor.com/maintenance_dsm1.html you think i should go for "complete timing belt kit" it looks like a good deal just wondering if anyone has had any experiance with these guys or there kits??? :talon:

Yes, the complete kit looks good. All you would need then is the 5 seals on the front of the motor and the job would be complete.

Before you start you should do a leak test to find out the condition of the valve stem seals as now would be the best time to pull the head if needed.

If head work is needed...heater hoses, radiator hoses, various water hoses spread over motor, accessory belts, fuel filter.

cool cool... uhmm what 5 seals are those, ive never heard anyone mention those in the timing belt overhaul type questions or answers???

2 cam seals, crank seal, oil pump seal, balance shaft seal.

Most people will say that the TB, BB, and tensioner every 60K and the pulleys and water pump every 120K. And you are correct, nobody really talks about the seals. But it would be a shame to do all the work to do a TB replacement and not replace $20-$30 worth of seals and have them leak shortly thereafter.

My list for every TB job: TB, BB, tensioner, 2 tensioner pulleys, idler pulley, water pump plus the 5 seals mentioned above are done at 60K. I also will check the condition of the valve stem seals as pulling the head would be easy during a TB job. I'm just anal that way.

also check the cast iron tensioner arm where the auto tensioner rod contacts it. Mine had a considerable dimple worn in it and I had to replace that as well or the measurement for the auto tensioner setup would have been wrong by enough that it worried me.

do you guys have the part numbers for those 5 seals???

Cam seals (2 req) - MD153103
Crank seal - MD174462
Oil pump seal - MD095355
Balance shaft seal - MD069950

Straight out of CAPS. Of course you should just call the dealer with your VIN number and they can double check those numbers (specifically for your car provided you still have the factory engine in place) for you before you purchase them.

quick question, is it necessary to change ALL the pulleys and tensioners? i know certain items only need to be changed at 120k and others every 60k. like the original poster, i am on a budget as well as the full timing belt job with all above listed parts costs around $400 even with a 20% discount from mitsu

I would replace the tensioner no questions asked because that failed on my car. As for the pulleys, check them out. If they are in great shape, still spin smoothly and not dry..... I would replace everything, but I had bent valves once already so thats just me.
