I am in the middle of changing my timing belt. I have followed the guide as shown in the articles on this site. I have taken off all of the belts including the timing belt and I have taken off the tensioner. Now I am a little bit stuck. The crank timing mark and the oil pulley timing mark are dead on but both cam timing marks are exactly 180 degrees off. Where do I go from here? Do I need to rotate the crank so that it is not aligning with the timing marks so that I can rotate the cams? Or do I need to do something different? Any help is greatly appreciated.

hmm by any chance did you spin the crank a couple times to see if it would re-align up and you then realized they were 180 deg out? if so, this is normal...I believe you need to spin the crank 6 full turns before the marks will all re-align thus due to the different sized sprockets

can i move the intake cam counter clockwise?

the timing mark on the gear itself is about one tooth from where it should be and I cant get it to line up exact. i can get the exhaust cam to line up perfect.

Both cam gears should have two marks on them, 180degrees apart. On mine, one of each are noticeably brighter (paint or some sort of etching liquid). They should be facing inwards (towards the center of the head). While these are aligned, the dowel pin that is marked on the cam gears should be facing up. (If it is on the bottom side of the bolt, then your gear is 180degrees out.)

If you are saying the intake gear is one tooth off, it's pretty normal. I have to take a 17mm wrench on both bolts and rotate it the one tooth til it's level and the timing marks line up. I usually take a zip tie at this point and fasten the two wrenches together so that the cams do not move or rotate.

Then the belt goes on, over the cam gears first, down past the idler pulley, around the oil sprocket and crankshaft sprocket, then up over the tensioner pulley. Everything should line up after you tension the belt using the autotensior/pulley.

ok, i got the belt and tensioner on, i waited 10 mins and i turned the crank 6 times and it didnt line up correctly, however, after 8 turns the cams and the crank are perfect but the oil pump is 180 degrees off, is this ok because i dont have balance shafts?

couldn't have said it better myself ... i would also wait about 15 minutes then spin the crank about 6 times and make sure it's still lined up, if not start over and repeat ...

yea thats what I am about to do....although I am so frustrated right now. I rotated it another six times and when I did everything lined up except the exhaust cam. Only thing that sucks now is that I go back to school on Tuesday and I wont be able to get it running by then. I had hoped to at least drive it around the block. This sucks
