Hey all.....new here and I apologize in advance. I am a big Jeep/4x4 guy and dont know squat about cars, let alone front wheel drive cars. I just picked up a 93 Eclipse GS DOHC that has a broken timing belt. I was told it is an interference motor and I have a 50/50 shot as to whether or not the valves are bent. I am looking for a couple things....

1. On line manual I can reference as I tear it apart.

2. Advice on where to start. I was told pull the valve covers and turn the cam to see if there is a space between the cam lobes and the valve itself. That makes sense to me, but I dont really understand how or what to do to check that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :(

there was a 92 or 93 eclipse gs @ my shop when i 1st got transferred there. timing belt broke and bent the valves. i think with these engines, if the belt brakes the valves will be bent. but im not sure so dont quote me on that one.

If the valves are bent......am I better off to get a junkyard head, rebuilt head, or fix what I got? I have tons of Jeep part hookups, but nothing for this car :( As of right now I have about 15 bucks in gas to trailer this car home invested, so I wanna make it as budget build as possible for a beater car.

You can probably find a good head in our classifieds section. Otherwise you can get a factory rebuild pretty cheap.

Tore it down last night and found the culprit. Looks like the lower gear lost its retainer nut and has been wobbling around. The gear itself is all chewed up and ate the belt away. My biggest problem now is I cant figure out how to tell if any valves are bent or not. Can anyone tell me what to look for?

Awesome Link buck....thank you! But I am not trying to make this a nice car ;) LOL I really just need it to run again so I am not gonna rebuild anything more than i have to. Might run to Pick n pull this weekend and look for a head to smack on it if that is the case. A couple of mechanic friends of mine said I still have a 50/50 shot as to whether or not the valves are bent? You disagree? How can I tell FOR SURE? Is there a technique or tool I can use to measure it?

Here is the belt :(

Look down the Spark Plug holes with a Mag Lite & see the dings in your pistons - I suppose you could also reinstall a new Timing Belt & do a Compression check - Make sure the Oil Pump Shaft spins free first.

- But dude - there are NO SHORTCUTS - if you are going to half-ass this fix make sure you take it to a dealer & trade it in IMMEDIATELY after you get it running because it will fail again VERY SOON. It will not be reliable transportation - period.

Well so far I have about 15-20 bucks in gas to go pick the car up invested ;) It was a free car, so if it runs 6 months I get my monies worth out of it :thumb:

My man,

The valves are bent. Not all but some. You will not be able to find a decent head in a junkyard. If you find one at all, something will be wrong. I agree completly w/BUCK in the shortcuts area. I speak from experience. The easiest thing to do is pull the head and find a spring compressor and dismatle the head. Buy some valve lapping/grinding compund and try to seat the valves some will look only to seat halfway these are your bent valves. Buy some new ones grind them in resurface your head and slap it back together. Your out maybe $150.00 if you shopped around, and have yourself a very fast ride. Good luck ;)

OK. You guys got me convinced. Now the hunt is on for a local place to get a rebuilt head ......

Hey man, yea same thing happend to me. EVERY SINGLE VALVE WAS BENT! It sucks but is inevitable(sp?) if not changed correctly.

This is correct, if you do your own labor. And i dont think you'll quite have a 'fast' car as it is a GS. But hey, to get you around it will be great! Good luck man.
