i have a 95 talon 420a engne and my timing belt broke the other day while crusing (5th gear 55 mph) and when it died i pushed in the clutch and tried to pop it other than that a rolled the engine over maybe 3 sec before i relized what happend whats the probibility of bending the rods?

yeah you ment what i knew.. LOL thats what i figured. you think i should change them out even if they are not bent? or is there anything in should do considering the car has 156k miles on it?

Well I'm not much of a 420a guy but ill tell you this.3years ago I was cruising down the highway in my 93 talon 2.0 doing about 90-95 when all the sudden my car dies.I had no idea the timing belt tensioner had failed and the motor might have been usable until.....I decided that before I lost all speed I would try compression starting it.so at 25mph I popped the clutch in 2nd and what I heard was heartbreaking.I knew immediately I was in trouble.pulled the head off the next day and 14 of 16 valves where bent.8 where engraved into the pistons making holes in 3 of 4.four more where stuck in my cylinder walls.so I hope not but you might be in trouble my friend.

anyone else wanna put their input in before i decide what im going to do.... well ill say im a lil more nervous from thinking just change a belt know to possible internal work but no jobs ever too big right?

I`ve replaced many, many timing belts/water pumps on the infamous 420a powered Neons & Plymouth Breeze models, & after belt replacement, they always start right up. The Chrysler 420a engine is not an interference engine, the 4g63`s are . . .

Pretty sure they are interferance motors. My friend on this site focker420 and I were cruising back from morinville in his 95 talon esi doing about 120 km/h and he chucked his timing belt, trust me those valves looked like hockey sticks they were so bent. Take that head off, if some of your retainers let go you may have scored your pistons as well.

When my tension failed. I was still able to drive it home but I could of saved the motor if I didn't drive it when I noticed the piston knockin the vavles now the motor is dead hah.
Bent vavles and marking on the piston

O well gave me a reason to 6bolt swap in my 2g

420as are interference engines, its the same basic design as a 4g63. The valves are a little further away from the pistons on the 420 and because of this the heads are more free flowing, they are more resistant to knock, and the valves have to travel further before they are violently slammed into the pistons, oh and there cranks stay where there suppose to be:p

ive had bad luck with my prior dsms, so no offense guys

for those of you that have had a belt go... when it went was there much of a noticable sound of the valves hitting the piston or bending ### if i recall it didnt clatter when the belt went.... with that said what rout should i go? if i pull the head and it didnt hurt the pistons i plan on doing some head work.. any ideas there?? i plan on starting this journey soon so any help is greatful.. thanks so far for everyones input

so heres my plan of attack........ i am going to pull the head and check make sure everything is intact and fine but plan on taking the head to an engine builder and and have him port and polish it and bigger valves.... has anyone done a valve job recomend vales and what size.. also would it be smart to shave the head??? should i also go with stiffer valve springs or should i go with retainers... any good springs out there?.......

Are you planning to build your motor and go turbo ? If not, it'll be a waste of money, just get a complete used head off a 420a at a junkyard and save yourself the money of ordering these parts separately.

yahh...my timing belt is basically half way off..so i feel your pain.. its sliding off toward the motor so i gotta do something quick... someones said take a ruler and have the case open and just slide its back on all the way..sound good?:hmm:

If Your Timing Belt Is Off Half Way There Is A Reason. Sounds To Me Like You Have Some Worn Timing Components!!! If You Slide It Back Into Position It Will Only Go Right Back To Where It Was When You Start Your Vehicle.

it is very possible you bent a few valves. If your going to take the time to do a timing belt you might as well make sure the valves are ok. I would pull the head and get it check out, its up to you though man
