Timing 180 out? Starting sounds like bomb going off?

swapplugwires [ECMTuning - wiki]

I am unable to start this car after a motor and tranny rebuild. With the spark plug wires running the stock way, the car will run for 4 seconds, stuttering and die. No CEL lights. Using the 2nd (correct photo of spark plug wire order), the car will not start and backfires right away like a bomb going off. Than crank crank crank... nothing.

Can it be possible my belt timing is off? Some dumbie put a yellow dot across from the white ones on the sprockets. I lined up the whites below, and cams up top are fine.

Anyone have any suggestions other than bad timing?

pull the number 1 spark plug out and put in a long screw driver or extention and turn pistons by hand if the number 1 piston is at TDC the extention will rise all the way up, all you have to do is check whether the cams line up too. It doesn't matter what color the person put because the cam has machined in grooves that can't be mistaken.

You could have quite a few problems but I would start with mechanical timing. As stated above check the #1 piston to make sure it is TDC when all your timing marks line up. If it does not line up, rotate the engine one more time and check. Also, make sure your oil pump marks line up if this motor still has balance shafts. At this point it would be wise to do a compression check just to make sure you didn’t bend any valves.
If you are certain mechanical timing is correct, then you need to check for ignition timing. Make sure you have the CAS in the correct position, usually somewhere close to where it was before the job. If you can get the motor running eventually, you can correct base timing.
If you are more than certain that timing is correct than you need to check spark and fuel. You can use the arc method to check that all cylinders are sparking with a good plug, and usually you can smell for fuel or see fuel pressure through your AFPR.
If you confirm you got spark, and fuel then you most likely have a tuning problem. I would say relook your adjustments and table values and make sure your wires are in the correct order. It’s easy to mess that up, most likely you’ll find your problem here if all else is correct.
I’m sure between a compression test, timing check, wire order check, fuel check, and table adjustments you’ll find your problem. Once you narrow it down to a certain system you can correct the problem or try replacing the system to see if it’s bad.
