Ok so I am doing a timing belt on my car and cannot get my marks to line up exact. I started with the cam gears, visegriped them so they dont move. Then went around the idler. But the problem I have is the oil pump and crank gear are a half a tooth off. If I line up the bottom marks my cams are half a tooth off, even with the belt already tensioned. Tried switch the belt around the other side and same thing. Is it possible to have a defective timing belt. It is a gates brand belt.

I found it much easier to use zip ties on the cam gears to be the best way. Using a vice grip only asks for damage!

the timming belt is fine, start with the timing belt with the cams on the marks, than using the black paper clips to hold the belt on the cam gears and that also holds the cam in time. than to the idler to oil pump, than go to the crank, on the crank be a half tooth or so off than rotate it to get it tight and it should line up, than get the tension. good pull the pin and rotate the motor by hand two times. and it should be on mark, oh ya be sure it is on tdc on compression.

Got it figured out. I started with the crank and oil pump and then moved up to the cam gears. It seemed easier this way, because the cams where easier to get to on top. Thanks for the help everyone.

That's similar to how I did it too. I started with the cams gears then the crank and oil pump then just slipped it over the idle pulley. I found this easier since I was about a tooth off doing it the other way as well.
