Ticking sound on cold start up?

When i bought my 1992 eagle talon tsi awd it had 5w-30 synthetic blend oil in it and i switched to a fully synthetic mobil 10w-30 but i cant remember with the previous oil how long it was ticking for before i switched.

im getting ticking noise from the engine bay on a cold start about a minute after i started the car up and it seems to tick for like 6-10min and then it goes away so i was thinkin on my next oil change add 1 quart of lucas oil stabilizer or use mobil 1 15w-50? can it be the oil causing the ticking or filter?

The motor has around 30k miles rebuilt but the previous owner didnt replace the lifters.

Sounds like the lifter tick. if there not the revised 3MM hole then you'll get that on cold starts. It takes awhile for the cold thick oil to get through the tiny 1mm factory ones.

Even if im using synthetic? u dont think its the change in oil or maybe the filter?

Sounds to me like it could just be an exhaust leak. Sometimes if you have an exhaust leak once it heats up it will expand and quit ticking.

well my downpipe does have a small leak in it but im getting that fixed this tues but i doubt thats the problem.

yeah i have lifter tick on a motor with 400 miles because that head oil port mod wasnt done. It lasts for like 2 minutes. Also If i leave the car parked for 2 hours and the coolant is still warm, but the oil isnt warm, the ticks a little louder but still dissappears in 2-3 minutes. Ive just let my car warm up for 10 minutes before driving.

i was thinkin it could be the oil filter possibly? i have a mobil 1 filter the regular one not the performance should i switch to the performance one and see what happenes maybe? i did forget to poor some oil in the filter but i dont think thats the problem...

I've never heard of an oil filter causing lifter tick. If you determine its lifter tick, the lifters are simple to change without pulling the head or even the cams. I believe partsdinosaur.com has the 3mm lifters for cheap.

how many would i need? i see topline revised lifters and 3g revised lifters so which ones are best?

well thats up to you if you wanna replace all 16 of them. or take the time to figure out which one is ticking

i heard thicker oil will stop the ticking or at least not make them tick for a longtime? i was thinkin to move up to mobil 1 15w-50 synthetic since its getting really warm out here were in the 80s already and im sure its gonna be hotter then that and they say thicker oil is better in the hot weather...im using 10w-30 mobil 1 syn but it seems to make my lifters tick for almost 10min i remember i used 15-50 in my 2g and the ticking would be seconds and be gone. but im worried on cold starts its gonna take long for that oil to flow?

Sounds like lifter tick. Yes, you should do all 16 while your in there.

Lifter tick, replace 'em all w/ the 3mm style lifters.

Throw a can of the 6cyl Engine Restore in there and it will eliminate it or heavily reduce it.
From my experience with high mileage 1gs, the lifters will typically tick for 15-30secs

you can still get lifter tick even with the 3g lifters, but here is a more effective way to reduce or get rid of lifter tick with either set.

haha I have no money right now and I just changed my oil to 5-30 conventional with a FRAM filter... the filter will have no effect haha. (I know I fail )

As far as the lifters go, I can tell you that if you get a piece of hose and put once side to your ear and the other go around your engine bay while it's happening and you will be able to get a good idea where the sound is coming from by using a makeshift stethescope.

i was thinkin on my next oil change to use mobil 1 syn 15w-50 since its getting hot as hell out here and so will my engine and i think thicker stuff is better protecting with all the heat then 10w-30 is....or does it depend on the mileage of the car? the motor was rebuilt and has around 32k miles on it so would it be ok to use thicker stuff i mean its still synthetic so it shouldnt be that heavy im guessin?
