Hello to everyone

I recently purchased a 97GS with the 2.0 motor, and there is a ticking noise coming from the head, I found this website the other day and most of you say that this is lifter tick, yet I cannot seem to find a thread on the site that is specifically dedicated to how to address this problem or what I can do to remedy it. I use Pennzoil Synthetic 5W-30. In the mornings when it is still cool outside it is the loudest but seems to die down as I drive the car and the engine gets up to operating temperature. Do I have to live with this noise, or Is there a way that I can get rid of it or at least make it quieter. Any input that you all can offer is greatly appreciated. Also are there any threads that give good advice on how to go about upgrading the 2.0. I would like to eventually convert to a turbo or add one but that will be a little ways down the road before I can afford that, right now I would like to just get the 2.0 running nicely.

All I can say is "welcome to the club." I've got a 97 (420a) as well and the ticking started around 30K. I'm now over 100K and the tick is as apparent as ever. I have found that Mobil One synthetic seems to keep the lifters a lot quieter than dino oil.
The upside is my engine still runs fine in spite of the ticking.

Unless you have $150+ to spend on lifters..... i'd say live with the lifter tick. It doesn't harm performance at all, its just annoying.... if you let the oil warm up it will stop ticking.

OK the 1G and 2G turbo engines are essentially the same (1G non-turbo motors are similar), but 2G N/A motors are made by chrysler, not mitsubishi, so revised MITSU lifters wont work on a chrysler 420A engine. The engine in your 2G GST is a 4G63 7-bolt, pretty similar to the 1G turbo engine. The revised lifters will work for you, but it wont work for the N/A.
