Thump when reversing

alright... i'm looking to buy this '99 GSX... I test drove it earlier, and when you put the car in reverse it makes like a thump/clink noise in the rear of the car, it makes it once, then didn't do it as I continued to back up... the owner said it does that once and a while.. he said he tried a whole nite to get it to do it again but it wouldn't.. what do you think could be causing it? i'm highly considering buying this car. thanx in advance

Are you sure its in the rear of the car? Could be a bad mount. Just an idea.

I took a good look at the mounts that I could see... they didn't look torn or anything... its possible it still could be the mounts... but the sound came from the rear, I'm positive my window was down

hmmm well...Could also be that the exhaust is hitting under the car. Check the hangers.

Is it an auto or manual? If its auto, it could be a u-joint or driveshaft carrier bearing.
