Well about year ago I got a hair up my butt and sold my 97 gst, to make a long story short I bought it back last week. The last owner informed me that the car overheated and blew a head gasket. Atfter I bought it back I removed the head yesterday and found a hole on the side of the block. I am pretty sure I will have to replace the entired block.... The hole is about the size of a 10 cent coin. I am now searching on which combo and where to purchase it from. I know I donnot want to go with a 6 bolt because of the little problems that comes with it. I am not worried about crankwalking because mine is a auto and from what I understand is the autos dont have crankwalk problems very often. I am only pushing about 320hp at the wheels and I am very happy with that. Should I just buy a block from a salvage yard and have that rebuilt or buy from a company already done?

Here is a picture

You sound like you are on the right track. My recommendation would be to go to the junkyard and pick up a 7 bolt block and rebuild that. Your best bet is going to be bore it .020" over and go with a Eagle/Wiseco combo. Very proven setup and a great price. As with going into any new build you are going to want to replace everything. I would recommend getting a new front case/oil pump setup, MAPerformance has a great Safety Oil Pump that has been proven in some pretty high hp cars, replace all the timing components and do a BSEK while you are in there. Always recommend going with ARP hardware and a good MLS headgasket to seal it up. I would check the head for any sort of warping since the car did overheat. A simple pressure test to check to see if its in good shape and you can reuse it if its all good. Buying a already built shortblock is more expensive but it does have its advantages. If you really are thinking about it give Marti @ Slowboy a call and tell him what you are going for and what you want and he will help you out in any way he can. Plus you get the piece of mind that it was assembled correctly and everything was put together exactly to specs.

I was also just informed that this hole can be fixed..... is that safe?

Yes, if done correctly. Weld with high nickel content rods and preheat the block before welding and then put it in an oven to slow the cooling process down after welding. It doesn't appear to be in the oil galley or anything. If it was mine, I would weld it without thinking twice.

If you can weld it it might be cheaper. Other wise a good condition block can be had pretty cheap these days

I would weld it as well, doesn't look like its in that bad of shape. Taken it out yet? Might be more damage than meets the eye, like a cracked cylinder wall ect.
If you can do a headgasket you can build an engine, no need to pay someone hundreds more than what it would cost to drop it off at the machine shop and put it together yourself.

Like someone already said, cheapest from here to get built. 6bolt used/jdm and piston/rod combo and go from there with the rest of the rebuild, you will save quite a bit from buying a shortblock.
