Currently have a DD, and miss my DSM (95 gsx), was possibly thinking about talking this guy down to $600 or so and getting it as a project. He said the mechanic said it just needed a bottom end rebuild. What are peoples thought on this? How much does an engine rebuild usually cost and what else am i also looking to replace to get this runnin again?

Depends on what the bottom end looks like. if you can reused your pistons, rods, and crank there shouldn't be much. of course, that is if you know how to do everything your self and have the tools and knowledge to do so. and must not be your first motor build. if you send it to a reputable shop to put your bottom end together for you using stock parts, i would assume $1k plus or minus. parts and labor and machining would be around there. PLUS OR MINUS...

It says it threw a bearing so you could be looking at the cheap end of a rebuild..As long as the machine shop says rods and piston, and crank are not shot, it should be semi Cheap...

If it's something internal..I don't think there is any wau to really tell what is actually wrong with it..I'm not an expert on internal working of an engine..I've never dealt with inernal problems before..

What I can tell you is that If I had the chance to get if for 500 bux or so, I would jump on it..134k on body, that's not a bad deal ffor you at all..Cause I'f it's just bearings and basic machine shop work like tearing it down and putting it back together..Say that cost you 600 including parts. That's also if you tear the engine yourself, pull the head and bring the block to the shop. You have a 96 tsi for 1200$..I would throw another 300 on there just as a cap with water pump and timing belt, fluids etc..So thats still a 96 tsi for 1500$ ish...

because if the engine is ####ed its not worth 800.

There was a 95 talon craigslist here a few weeks ago that cranked and ran for 750. I was trying to sell my aftermarket stuff to go get it, someone bought it and relisted it for 1600...

I bought a 2g with a spun rod bearing and end up spending more then 1k in parts and machine work. I had to get 1 rod, crank, o.e.m gasket set, and since I was rebuilding my bottom end. I decided to have the machine shop replaced the valve seals, clean my oil pan because of all the bearing shaving. Don't forget to get all new timing component and water pump. It's not that cheap unless you know how to assemble the motor yourself. I had the machine shop do all the machining, I did all the assembly myself. Do it right the first time so you don't have to do it a second time.

AWD shells go for a g-note plus.

Or maybe just because you have seen 1 AWD shell go for 300.00 you shouldn't assume that is what they are worth. But hey a guy who owns a FWD and has been a member for 3 whole months is an expert on these things.

I would say it is worth it to buy and fix up the motor. I can't see it being too terrible of a bottom end rebuild... I would think you'd have less than 1k in repairing if even if you have to pick up some stock rods for it. Sounds like you might be able to get away with just bearings though. Of course, you won't really know until you get in there and take a look at it.

That car sold :( however i found a new one! 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX what kinds of questions should i ask him, does it seem like a good deal? Looking to make money off it, but also might end up keeping it to drive. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

If he sells it as a parts car you won't be able to register it without jumping through hoops to get a salvage title.

This new one seems a bit stripped out... Do you have any 2g parts laying around still? Seems like you'd have a lot more work, time and money into something like this one as opposed to one that already has everything there and just needs fixed...

Understand when he says $150 in parts to fix he's lying, or using garbage parts.
And there will be labor.

i agree to that, however if i can talk him down to say $650, i think it might be a steal. ive never worked on engines or anything mechanical before but ive taken out my engine, tranny etc on my old gsx before so im pretty familiar with most of it. Also i live very close to English Racing which im sure most are familiar with and thye have very good rates.

It seems odd to me that if he has 2 other DSM's he is fixing for the same thing that he wouldn't just fix this one too since it only costs him "$150 for parts"... Sounds like there may be more wrong with that one than he is telling you about... Just my opinion on the matter though.
