A friend of mine has offered me his DSM and I wanted to run it by some experience to see what you all thought

1993 GSX with a Talon front clip
Big 16g ported and clipped
255 walbourgh
Sheppard racing tranny
Injectors (not sure of the CC)
Brusher FMIC
ACT 2600
Super VAFC
Needs a head gasket

Interior is decent and the car is in primer
He hit a deer on X-mass day
And put the talon clip on

On spray (75 shot) the car ran low 12's

I can buy the car now for 1200

How does that sound?

93...in primer...12K? No way. Especially when having to pull the head for a gasket job. Who knows what the pistons will look like since he was running the juice and you don't know what cc injectors they are. :barf:

You can buy one painted and do the setup like that yourself for around the same price if not cheaper. That way you don't have to do a head gasket job and you know what you are getting yourself into. This is of course if you do the work youself. Also if you do the setup correctly you wont need the juice to hit 12's.

thats around maybee 5K in mods, depending on what other parts are in the vehicle. The head gasket can be a pain in the ass If you decide to do it yourself, as other things will probably turn up and you will need to fix them. I would offer him 10 for the car considering that it is getting more of an elderly vehicle.
He obviously wants to sell it and with that head gasket that will deter alot of buyers from wanting to have that hanging over thier shoulders. good luck man!

1200 would be a deal.

12k is overkill.

to be honest the car has been a race car for about 5 years
it is a cosmetic NIGHTMARE
needs lots of work to make it look good again

Everybody is alluding to it, but the (one of them) answer you're looking for to "what could be wrong with it?" is detonation. If he was putting down that much HP with stock injectors, which I'm not sure can be done (anybody?) then at least he was on the VERY edge of their flow. so, the engine could easily have run lean, detonated (knocked) a bunch and burnt up those pistons, blown HG, etc. Get a compression check done. Then sit down and have a good chat with him about the car. See EXACTLY what he knows about it, how he tuned it, and all that. If he shows the slightest sign of uncertainty, save the money (still take out the loan) and buy lots of fun parts for your car! :thumb:

Edit: Also, see what warranty/recall work has been done to it. I used to have a 97, and there's lots of crap that may need to be replaced. Good luck. My advice is just keep the money and just dive into your own car. That's the best way to learn, and you'll more fully understand and appreciate performance if you do.

I agree with hereitcomes. Until you open up the engine you have no idea what your going to find. If you feel comfortable working on the car and it's not your only car 1200.00 isn't all that bad.

This means it has it ups and downs then. It needs body work, head gasket, and that is just the things you know about. However it does come with the mods listed. Personally, I would say no but I am very anal about my vehicles. Both of my babies were virgins when I got them. This way I knew exactly what it needs and why something goes wrong.

1200 is a great deal i wish i could come pick it up but why a super vafc thats for vtec are you sure its not just a s-afc. Id buy it just for a winter car and summer milage car also race the crap out of it. drive her till she dyes.

id run it 1200 bills if the pistons look like shit throw 2g or get creative with it port and polish the head while its off spend a few bucks make it worth it

thanks that was very helpful info.. to dub2gsx it has frank 3 turbo, apexi FMIC, hks WG, ported manifold, 255 pump safc... not sure ifinjecotrs r stockor not

By the sounds of it, I'd stay away from it. The headgasket would be a hassle, and there isn't really anything that sounds appealing about the car, except for the mods...Crap interior, crap exterior, and a motor that doesn't run. Too much work for me. You could probably part it out for more than he's asking though.

You could re-sell those mods, and get your moneys worth.

You could sell the Shep tranny easily for $500-700, the Buschur FMIC for $400-500, and the 16g will easily net $300. You could buy it, and get your money back in a week, and still have parts to sell.

Id buy it and part it out.

Personally, I would jump on that...But then, I am a glutton for punishment, and have a tendency to buy neglected and/or broken DSMs. LOL.

I paid $1200 for a car in excellent cosmetic shape that had a few small mods and a bad ECU and fuel delivery problems...After all is said and done, I think I will have dropped about $1000 in repairs, provided the tranny doesn't need a full rebuild.

So that sounds like a deal to me -- if anything, you can part out some of the performance mods and spend the money making a more reliable street car if that's more what you're into.

try to at least get 550's!! Or 650 if you plan on doing more upgrades...

I just don't see how he could forget to get bigger injectors!! Hope he has them but if he doesn't then I wouldn't buy the car!!!!

dood just go look at it yourself. No one on here is going to have the slightest info on helping you make a decision. have the car inspected if you dont know what to look for. do a compression test. check for leaks. check shaft play. look for yourself to see if they are aftermarket injectors. Only way to know is to look. one car could be owned by an old lady and a pos and another car that you think was beaten up be well taken care of.
