<-- haha it says im a "lurker"
yea i talked to him agin today and he told me two more things ab it.. one it has a apexi BOV on (which he said hes gonna keep) thats been venting to the atmosphere for a while now... and two he says he "felt" the input seal break?!?!?!?? wtf? ive never heard of someone being able to feel it break... after he felt it he pulled over and had it towed home. i wonder if he "felt" something internal let go... unless the input bearing went also.. he could have felt that i guess. or maybe the through out bearing.
theres nothing fiber inside the tranny right? only the tranfer. tranny is all gears. so even if there is no oil (tranny) it should start, run, go through all the gears and move on its own with no interruption right?
sry i was thinking out loud LOL

ok. i know this is three reply in a row. this will be the last one till i get a reply back!
if i buy the tsi i found another local guy that had part of his build stolen. so he is selling all the left over parts. he said he will give me a big 16G turbo, manifold, oil lines, FMIC and all chrome pipeing, and fuel rail all from a 2003 Evo 3, and 585 injectors, and a brand new set of iridum plugs for 500$. and hell bring it to my house. he said the turbo came off his brother evo and has absolutly no shaft play. is that a good price for all these items?

As it is now I've been driving a Mazda Protege my parents gave to me to get to school and back this September but were in a bit of "tight spot" financially and we need another car so it looks like I'm buying my own and giving them back the Protege.

I need something fairly reliable but I still have good access to the Mazda so it doesn't need to be extremely reliable. I've always wanted something with a more power than the Protege (2.0L 130HP) and i came across a 92 Plymouth Laser RS and thought it might be a good car.

Heres the details: 1992 Plymouth Laser RS Turbo 5SPD - Halifax Plymouth Cars For Sale - Kijiji Halifax

I've heard mixed oppinions about these cars, while actually mostly the Eagle Talon and its transmission. Anyway, I'm wondering first of all if you guys think thats an OK deal (keep in mind prices are in CAD), and secondly what should i know about these cars maitnence wise?

Thanks in advance any help is much appreciated.

P.S. - Sorry for the long and partly irrelevant story but i already typed it so its staying.

He said he changed it to a bigger turbo 16 g i think but i'm not really sure. The horsepower claim sounded off to me anyway. I'm just looking for a funny and sporty car to drive 200whp would probably be plenty enough for me.

Looks like a good deal and the car is clean, would make a perfect sleeper. If your wish is to make 200hp its quite easy. First off even though the guy said it's a 16g, it's most likely just the stock 14b turbo, i would inspect it, but regardless the 14b is a good turbo. I would get an intake, full 3" turboack exhaust, mbc set at 15 psi, and a tune would get you at or very near your 200hp wish. If you can find an oem 2g exhaust manifold and 2g o2 housing it would help as well and you can get these oem upgrades for cheap on ebay.

Its worth a look at, just do all the regular checks an balances like oil antifreeze that sort of thing. If the engine was over hauled an when the last time the TIMING BELT was replaced. I bought mine an pulled out drove a mile an my belt tore up the middle.

I've ridden in a Protege. Any DSM (even non-turbo) will feel better than one of those. Don't those have 13" wheels stock?

Some of them do, but not mine. Mine has an optional sport suspension that came with 15" wheels, as far as handling goes i've never driven a better four dour car, however its rather lacking in the power department.

When do these engines typically need a rebuild? And what psi is safe with stock internals?

Depends on the maintenance. Properly done, it will last ages. Normally, they get abused. Most people don't worry about a rebuild (pistons, rods, crank) until they make the bigger power. 15psi is about the maximum for a stock fuel system. At 20psi it's recommended to get new head bolts. 1g bottom ends have been used to 600+whp. A compression test can give you an idea what shape the rings are in.

hey man thats a good buy just do ## maintenance first to make sure all is in good shape then you can proceed to add exuast and intake ,downpipe and more boost ...the issue with transmission in our cars is from bad drivers who dont know how to properly service and launch the car...there are many rebuilders that add strenght to the trans of our cars for a goos price so thers no worries there...:D:D:thumb::thumb:

You need to check everything just Like buying any other car. There is nothing wrong with dsm transmission's. I'm running mid/low 11's with a 2100lb pressure plate and my buddy is running high-mid 9's on a tilton twin disc clutch and both our tranny's are fine, tho to be honest now that i think of it mine has double syncro's and a fresh rebuild. point being the everything from the motor to the trans, transfer case, rear axle, turbo's etc are all pretty strong and reliable AS LONG AS you treat them/drive them/maintain them right.

check timing belt, test drive, listen for weird noises, trans shifting etc and good luck and hopefully welcome to a great community! :thumb:

Thanks guys this has been really helpful, its good to see theres a good community for owners the Mazda was the same way and i enjoyed the forums. I'm going to see if i can get a time to go see it while my dads off work (hes a mechanic), hopefully i can even talk him down a bit since it was up for $1800 like 2 weeks ago when i didn't have any money.

I have always liked dsm, but never had the money to pick one up. i basically want to build a track car and found a laser awd for 700. the car is a 92 with very little rust. according to the seller the only ting it needs is a head. i am just looking for a opinion on rather i should buy it or not. oh yeah it has a rebuilt title due to engine fire. it already has a 3in exhaust on it and i don't know what else. is there any difference between the laser and talon/eclipse on the upgrade front, or can i just get parts for the more common dsm's. thanks for any info, and i will be going to see it in about an hour. here is the car, clicky

All the 1g's are the same, other than appearance. The 90 had a few things that were different, like the ECU, throttle body I believe, etc.

An AWD for $700 is a good deal, some shells go for that price. But you may want to check the engine bay pretty close if there was a fire, you don't want to have wiring issues.

Make sure the head is the only thing needed for the engine. It's a decent deal but, I would try to talk him down a little on the price because of the salvage title and fire issue. That's just me though. If you buy the car, this forum will be a very useful tool to get it on the road again.

yeah i was going to offer him 500-550 and let him come back. anyone who has sold a car knows that you don't list for what you actually want, but a little more. we'll see how it goes. he says it has a different block in the car and comes with the one that smacked the head. the bad block has a hole in #2 piston, but the block is good. also he said it has a newer trans and clutch in the car.

That's a good deal for the parts alone. But a heads up, it's almost never just the head that will get the car running well.

yeah i know, but for a almost rust free shell and spare block i think it is a great deal. besides it will just sit in the garage for a month or two anyways.

That is a really good deal. The pictures of it look like the body is in really good shape. I got mine from a guy out in Canton for $900 but its only Fwd. If you buy that car just pull the motor and rebuild it. Also find out if it has the 6 or 7 bolt motor.
