190 sounds suspect. Without doing a rebuild with higher compression pistons there shouldn't be more than 170-180 at most. I'm calling BS on those compression numbers, especially with that kind of mileage. Ask if the engine is still internally stock or not. If he says it isn't ask him what brand and compression ratio pistons were used. He'll need a final compression of more than 8.5:1 to hit 190psi.

He doesn't know what was done to the engine before he bought it. As far as he knew it was a stock engine.

Used Car Value - Mitsubishi Eclipse-4 Cyl. Coupe 2D GSX Turbo (AWD)

I ran a value on the vehicle. As you can see from the link above, the car is generally worth from 4200-6300 depending on condition. Now if the body is perfect, the interior is perfect, and the owner has reciepts for the recent work done on the car, i would probably pick it up. If you are unsure about the rear end noise and the heistation, i would have the vehicle checked out before purchasing it.

The hesitation could be a number of things from boost leaks to fuel problems. I would check to make sure the vacuum lines are hooked to the fuel solenoid on the lt front of the engine bay. I would also look into why the o2 sensors are throwing codes which may mean they need replacing.

Is the exhaust leak between the head and the manifold or the manifold to the turbo? This leak is not too bad to fix but does take some time.

As to the compression numbers, when i bought my GSX and put a freshly stock rebuilt 7 bolt into the vehicle and did a compression test after the car was warmed up, my numbers were around 185. It definetly does sound like someone did a rebuild on the motor and can guarantee that it is probably not the original motor inside the vehicle.

Definetly do as much research into the vehicle as you can. Have the carrier bearings, transfer case, and rear end checked out. I would also call the dealership with the VIN to see if the Tcase recall was ever done as well as the ball joint recall.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the input. I don't know exactly where the exhaust leak is. Most likely it is between the turbo and manifold. He did say the downpipe gasket needs to be replaced. I will also call on the tcase hase been recalled. Thanks for the help again:thumb:

I have a 97 GSX and I too had a miss, if you want to call it that above 4000rpm. I regapped the plugs around .030, miss went away. Just throwing it out there.

Alright so here's the big reason I'm even on this site :v I'm currently looking at two possible Eagle Talon that I'd like to buy.

1991 Eagle Talon TSI AWD - Calgary Chrysler Cars For Sale - Kijiji Calgary
1994 Eagle Talon TSI AWD - Calgary Dodge Cars For Sale - Kijiji Calgary

I'm leaning toward the '91 car- I much prefer the look and it seems to be in better shape altogether. My only issue is it's an automatic- I don't know about the '94.

What do you guys think about the price on either of those? And since I'd much rather have a 5-speed, could someone give me an idea as to how much work and money I should expect to sink into converting it?

Finally, how do these cars handle in winter? We get pretty cold here- typically the lowest it goes in a year is about -22F (-30C) although it does get as cold as -40. Roads get quite icy, especially in early spring around here, and it's not terribly uncommon to wake up in the morning with 3-4 inches of snow on the ground.

I'm assuming since both the cars I'm looking at are AWD they would handle at least decently well in these conditions, especially with some proper snow tires. Am I right?

I think that's everything I've got to ask for the moment, sorry if any of these are really n00bish :v

The 94 I would be concerned about. First off if it is a 6 bolt motor 4 bolt rearend then it might be worth it but the seller is lacking some details it seems like for how much he is asking. I would find out what all has been done with that one. Do all the typical checks (compression tests, leakdown if possible, clean fluids etc...im sure you know the drill) The 91 is an awesome color combo you dont see too often and trust me I was a five speed owner (not dsm) and went to auto when I got the dsm and I fell in love. Turbo's love automatic transmissions and alot can be done with shift boxes and the like out for our auto cars now. (opinion) I think the 1ga's look better....they both look like relatively good options but if the 94 is a 7 bolt I would be leary (maybe there is a reason he is cutting it loose)....find out a little more on it. Test drive will probably make the decision for you along with how deep your pockets are.

Just realized the 91 has an $8000 asking priceWTF DAM talk that guy down as much as you can....sure is clean but wow.. if you've got the money :rocks:

Dont want to hyjack but when did they start putting 4 bolt rear ends in dsm's?

Go for the 91

Turbos are entirely new to me- I've only ever driven naturally aspirated cars. I do know the power curve is entirely different, and I have heard that turboed engines wear out more quickly- although I found Talons with double the mileage of either of these when looking closer to home, so I'm doubting whether that's true or not.

In any case I'm going to be able to take a close look at both this coming Saturday- I will keep an eye out for any issues in both cars. Assuming the best case, what sort of price would you suggest I offer on these? I can afford the 8, but why spend more money than I need to? :v

I figured as far as the transmission I'd leave it automatic over the winter and see how I felt about it once summer came around- it'd be too cold to be doing work like that anyway. :p

$8000? LOL If you are willing to drop 8G's on a 91? If you are what you should do is get the 94. I'm sure it needs some work. But you save almost $3000. With that you can get a new....Engine?....Turbo setup?....Or you can go through and make it reliable again. Oh yeah and its 5 speed FTW!!! :dsm::rocks:

'92

I would go for the '91 but it isn't worth 8,000. More like 3k to 3.5k maybe 4k if it's super dooper clean. Plus I like the COLOR!!

These cars handle extremely well in the snow. I drive mine year round and I have summer performance tires that have no snow rating and I get around everywhere I need to in the snow.

The '94 looks nice but I like to buy mine stock. Then again the '91 is Auto which means it comes with the smaller 13g turbo and smaller injectors. If the '94 is manual (which it doesn't say) that earns some points in my book. But I am partial to the POPUPS!!
