So I went to put my valve cover back on today and began torquing down the bolts... I looked at the shop manual and said oh okay 36ft/lbs...that seems a little much but whatever, that's what I'll go by. I started torquing some down and I think I stripped the first two that I tried to tighten. The 3 one I broke the valve cover... What the fksfjoiej... So I need a new valve cover now.. Anyway, I'm talking to RDRKT and asked him if he thought I really stripped those bolts, and he asked what I torqued them down to.... I told him and he said, you sure it wasn't inch/lbs..

So anyone ever stripped one of these bolts holes before? Can I just tap the holes to one size larger???

I've been told thats the proper way to fix it.
 
you can do that ( re-tap the hole) or you can jb weld it and tap it to the same size.
 
Yeah, that'll work for the little amount of torque the valve cover requires. Just fill it up with JB weld, let it dry, drill it, retap it, and BE CAREFUL THIS TIME! :D
 
Thank You! Next question.. How do I convert inch pounds into foot pounds, because I don't have any inch pound measurement on my torque wrench?
 
Last question. I know I'm asking for everything to be handed to me, but.. what size tap will I need. I guess that's the same question as what size bolts are they? I only need to retap one of the outter bolt holes.

Where the HELL did you find 36 foot-pounds?

It's three to four foot-pounds!

Even better, on eensie little screws like that, it's NO foot-pounds, it's just "snug".

Haynes says 36 in/lbs.. I was too used to looking at ft/lbs specs that day and didn't think.

That's right. I must have missed "snug" under the torque specs. My mistake.
 
You need to find out the thread size of the bolt you are going to use. If it's metric, it will be designated by a thread size and length (i.e. 6M 120). If it's standard, it will be the sizes you are accustom to, like 3/16, etc. You can find out the thread size with a thread gauge or by meshing the threads of a similar bolt together to find the best match. Once you have the thread size, you look for the tap that is for that thread size. The tap package will generally tell you which drill bit to buy. Buy that suggested drill bit, drill your hole as straight as possible, run the tap in to the correct depth, remove, install bolt, drive down the road.

Disclaimer: Something always goes wrong when tapping bolt holes.

Thanks, I'm somewhat familiar with tapping threads from when I did my (useless) EGT gauge. I tapped the number 1 runner of my SFT manifold, which by the way was a pain in the ass because the tap and die tool wouldn't fit in there so I needed to clamp the tap with a vise grip.
I hadn't come across any problems then. What do you mean something always goes wrong?
 
my 1g haynes says inch pounds...my 2g manual says 26 or 30 inch lbs...umm, I think you misread.

Nope just used the tap on the head, I didnt even have to drill it any. The bolts fit through the valve cover holes with room to spare. Good Luck Oh and be careful, do this with the valve cover off, and keep the metal shavings from falling in there, that would spell disaster!
