Not consistent, but probably 50:50 I will go to start the car and the tach spikes to ~6k and fuel pump makes wild rushes.

This all started after I broke that TOB shaft on the trans bell housing (bolts got loose). I had to start it once or twice with the car in gear (TOB shaft broken @ this point). Put a new trans in it and the starter was making some bad sounds so I put a new one in; no difference.

Can you guys shed any light on this?

Did you check all your wires in the engine bay to make sure none are pinched after swapping the trans?

If anyone is searching: bad starters apparently do this. The reconditioned one I bought new from autozone was functionanal, but had other problems with it. I put another on in (after 6 mo) and the car starts fine.
