tdc with head on

Yes, you can, but if your belt already stripped a few teeth its probably off already. If you pull your spark plugs, and turn the crank manually there should be no resistance while rotating the crank pulley, if there is your valves are bent. Good luck.:thumb:

if the valves are bent the just pull the plugs it will turn over so easy because of no compression. to find tdc if thats what your asking just pull the first plug and stick a long screwdriver down the whole and wait till it comes all the way to to top

can you rotate a engine with the head on? wont you cause damage to valves? My engine stripped a few teeth off, want to see where the timing is at.
A running engine has no problem rotating with the head on. Just be sure to rotate clockwise.

if the belt is stripped and wont turn with the engine and i turn over the engine at some point i assume i'll hit valvles right? Do I need to loosen the cams to seat the valves so I can find tdc? The motor does turn over easy, but I didnt move it very far.

Yes, loosen the cam bolts about a quarter inch. You don't need to take them off. If your pistons are encountering resistance, it is a certainty that the valves are already damaged.

I think most of us would pray a miracle, put the belt back on, and do a compression test. Atheists would just take the head off.

I'm an Athiest...LOL

If your belt is in that bad of shape, you were kinda askin for it i guess....

You better be prepared for the worst.....

couldnt i just release the cams to seat the valves and put air in and listen for air? i also would like to replace the valve seals, which would require the above plus removing the springs, the haynes manual then suggests moving the valves around to check for bent ones. you would think that would be easier than pulling it all apart?

Sure can. What you really need is a leak down tester.

Let me take a moment to tell you about a couple keys on your keyboard you seem not be aware of. One is the shift key. There are actually two of them for convenient access with either hand. These are used to make a large sized letter (capital) at the beginning of each new sentence. Another is the apostrophe. Use it were letters are removed from contractions.
Thanks.

Update. Finally got the belt on in the cold ice and snow. Got it started and warmed up, did a compression test. 1=155 2=150 3=155 4=162. Did I get lucky or what??? Also this car shows 224k on the odm. Is it even possible for a engine with that many miles to have that compression? Opinions? I was just about ready to part the car out, might be worth driving.

Was the compression test with the engine at operating temperature or cold? It makes a difference. Also, do a wet compression test with the engine warmed up (i.e. pour a half cap of oil through the spark plug hole.

I was expecting to see a few zeros from bent valves. I thought 150 to 165 is good for a turbo? I went by the numbers listed from how to do a compression test.

1G (90-94) T/E/L 1.8L NT engine 2.0L NT engine 2.0L Turbo engine
Compression ratio 9.0:1 9.0:1 7.8:1
Standard compression 185 psi 192 psi 164 psi
Service limit 131 psi 145 psi 121 psi
