They were NOT tested. There is a German company called Goeckel who converted some 1Gs to Targa.

Interesting, I should have mentioned that I stated that based off of what I read. Time to do some research.

That's what I found on the VFAQ, regarding the "market test"....

To me it seems like the one above was a custom/dealer conversion since it's labeled a GS, but not sure on that one...

I remember seeing somewhere a concept 1g targa top. I think it was a CL model. I was wondering if anyone had the link to that cause I can't find it anywhere.

That was the european model, the Eclipse CT ..

Forget where i found the pictures on it before .. i think its a sweet idea .. but you'd have to pretty much have a cage i would think to be able to support the car the way it would need it. At least for the american models that werent "made" for it.

the european models were reworked by a company to be strong enough for the targa, there r reenforcements welded underneath the body panels and interior panels, no need for ugly roll cage

hey dsmers....im wondering if anyone knows of a website that gives details about doing a targa top conversion to 2g dsms......ive seen it done on a number of them and i would like to do it as well for the show part of my talon.....if anyone has anythin that could help please let me know....thankx

That'd be a good idea assuming you didn't care about the fact that it's FWD.

I'm assuming one of the reasons dre has/needs a lot more bracing is due to the fact that he is AWD, opposed to where ProJectEclipse is FWD. Obviously an AWD is going to experience more flex, especially when you are putting out numbers as high as dre's dsm is.

The difference in cost between say a 99 GST opposed to a 99 GST Spyder would probablly be a couple g's. If it was up to me, I'd rather invest half the difference of the price into the roll cage and strategic bracing, opposed to paying more for a heavier FWD Spyder.

Both the targa's are lookin real nice btw. Good job guys

i have a 97 GSX and i saw one with the targa top .. he obviously had to get it custom. anyone know where i can get it done or does anyone know how much it would be

Eh, very, very custom. As you know a DSM is a unibody, so the roof plays a major part in stability/flexing, without extra bracing and weight, it would be like driving a school bus on Nuremburgring :thumbdown

funny enough, the guy that had the featured car sometime back with the targa top was from NJ as well, ask him specifically where it was done, maybe you can go to the same shop

the targa top is not an easy mod at all. if you cut the top off, and dont reinforce the frame/body i would NOT recomend driving the thing ever. that is unsafe by all means.


for some reason i think getting a sypder and then cutting up a junkyard 2g and somehow welding the bitches together and moddin the sypder would be easier in the long run.

well, I'm officially insane. I have done everything to my car you can think of. I've did the underlights (yeah...thats hard )... I've done the sound system... I've pulled the motor and fully built it.... I've went turbo....and now I've taken a sawsall to the top of my car. Thats right.. I'm a Targa Talon! And it feels good. I'm still trying to get the weather stripping to work right, but the top is off! Here are some pics, enjoy!

Very sweet! I know that some 1G's in Europe came with Targa tops. Maybe you could use the weather stripping from a 1G Targa?
