Just to set the record straight, the automatic belt itself works fine. However, what happened about two hours ago has happened several times since I've owned the car and it kinda hurts. when you get out of the car in somewhat of a rush, and forget to take the shoulder belt down from the a-pillar / roof area, and you start to stand up and the damn thing nearly stabs you in the kidneys.

I'm wondering if I'm the only one, I mean I'm not a little guy, and there are a lot of not little guys running around and this is not a big car.

thinking it shouldn't be too hard to replace it with a normal run of mill seat belt like on almost every other car. and wondering if anyone here has done that. might just put in a harness... don't know.

-yes I'm aware I'd have to put in a harness bar, and know that a harness that is bolted to the floor can compress a spine in an accident. - I'm thinking someone is thinking that.

I may be wrong, but Canadian 1g's had manual seat belts. I would imagine they wouldn't be too hard to install them in a US car.

I say that cause a local guy has manual belts from a Canadian 1g.

Seatbelt VFAQ

Here you go, although as stated "For the record:
The legality of this is debatable, and there is a distinct possibility that IF the insurance company finds out, they can refuse to pay a claim. Standard disclaimers apply."

AWESOME thank you!

They likely wouldn't find out. I have no coverage for the car, only liability (but they will never take my DSM away), so there wouldn't be an agent assessing damages on my car. unless heaven forbid, I end up in a hospital, as I do have coverage on myself. I might talk with my lawyer/CPA, could possibly be some legalese since it would be replaced with an item of equal or greater strength and safety. being the car is 20 years old it shouldn't be too hard to convince a judge if need be that standards for safety have changed dramatically.

No problem ;) Yeah, I hate legal mumbo-jumbo myself. Well best of luck with it, you can post a WTB add in the classifieds soon (only need 30 tech post total and a 1day wait) since there are quite a few Canadian members I'm sure one of them has a set or a car being parted out if you need the parts.

I personally don't mind them, I like how I always have a seatbelt on without having to even think about it.. No tickets ever :)

Close the car door with the key in "acc" position, the auto seatbelts will operate, correct? Pull the "fuse" labeled "seat belts" Now open the door, auto seat belts no longer work, right? Why remove it when you can disable it. To get the auto seat belt back working again, just install the fuse.

My dads car. Made friends with a Canadian. Got a full set up, belts, braces, a and b pillars and center console block offs.

Hmm, that sounds like an idea. Just use it like the old school Jettas-it is quite awkward though. My 90' All Trac has auto belts, but you cant unbuckle it.

Or....

2g Seat belts in a 1g

point is I actually like wearing a seatbelt. having it disabled and wound all the way back would make it too much of a hassle to put on and take off. maybe I'll just get used to it. stock belt doesn't really go across my shoulder/chest like I would like it to. I'm sure I'll figure something out.

BTW nice pic Jeff
