stupid question about balance shafts

Hey guys, was removing my balanceshafts, and I'm planning on just cutting the rear one and using it as a stubby shaft, and I read somewhere you can just weld the hole closed after you cut it, what kind of metal is it? Aluminum? Iron? I have no idea. Thanks alot though.
