Hello all. I need some help about a strange sound i am hearing from my engine compartment while accelerating. Once i hit the 3750-4200RPM mark i get what i can only describe as what sounds like a turbo but not as loud. But i do not have a turbo. Thanks for info.

i checked for a vacuum leak but didnt find one. It acually sounds like a turbo spooling up...just softer. It acually happens right when the car accelerates faster too. Could the previous owner have installed one of those "fake" turbo sound devices?? thats the only other idea i can think of

Yea, it was strange when the fastest car i have ever owned was a 94 civic and i get in this car for the first time and step on the gas and right about the 4000rpm mark it pushes you back in your seat a little more and does that hiss. Makes me really wanna put in a turbo :thumb::hellyeah:

Thats funny that you say that because i also have 1997 ESi aside from my TSi...what happened was that i had a hole in my intake which caused air to leak out...thus causing the "turbo" sound. CHeck all of your lines too. What mods do you have??? I also have a full 16g turbo kit with all the piping, BOV, and side mount intercooler for sale that i was going to put on the ESi but now that i bought the TSi i have no need for it besides a back up. I will sell it to you for cheap if your interested.

do you have a cold air intake because i used to own a GS and i had an AEM full ram cold air intake and it sound like a turbo spooling but just a little quieter especially in the high rpm range or when you would punch it.. also the intake would make this noise if you had a hole or the intake gasket was bad check that out if i were you i would get some carb cleaner turn the car on let it warm up and spray the carb cleaner around the intake gasket and see if the car's idle drops or spikes and that would tell your intake gasket is leaking also spray all over the intake and see if you have a hole or crack. hope that helps

Throttle body spacers or one of those "Tornado" things will also cause a whistle due to the turbulance caused by them. Check for one of those.

check for any and allloose fitting air intake components, also how are you checking for a vacuum leak? proper way is by smoking the intake system!! this will find even the smallest vacuum leaks that will cause that insane whistle
