Strange Electrical/Steering problem.

Problem started about 2 days ago. Car is a 1990 Talon, all mods in my profile.

Basically what happens is, sometimes when I go to turn, all my dash lights will come on and I will lose power steering. The car acts like its off, but its still running. The last couple of days here have been really warm and a lot of the snow is melting so its quite wet outside. Im not sure if that has anything to do with it but I figured I would mention it. But like i was saying all the dash lights will come on and i lose my power steering. When I move the wheel back to its normal position all the lights go off and everything is normal. Alternator, battery and alternator fuse are about 1 month old. This isnt really effecting anything like causing it not to start, but its quite annoying and I would like to resolve it.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Possibly loose belt? Hear any squeeling? Not sure, but when it gets humid and moist, sometimes the belt gets a little slippery. Or maybe a seizied up power steering pulley?

No belt squeal at all. Just recently replaced the belt and all the pulleys as well. Forgot to mention that, sorry.

r u sure the car is still running when this happens. this happens to me when my talon dies while im driving. i fixed it by replacing the TB, is your talon idling right or does it idle low when you come to a stop.

Yes, I'm positive the car is still running when this happens or I would not be asking this question .

Idle is bang on when the car is running/coming to a stop. The idle is even spot on when the problem is happening.

There's a couple different things it could be.

Are you SURE the engine is still running? If so, jack up the car and look for belt slippage while a friend turns the wheel with the engine on. Basically try to make the problem happen.

If no slippage occurs, check and clean the PS sensor and look for moisture buildup in the steering column. I'm basically getting at this being a PS pump internal failure or a short in the steering column.

Yes, Im 100% POSITIVE my engine is RUNNING. And the belt is not slipping at all either. I've checked for that.

Ill look into the sensors and the column. Where abouts is the PS sensor?

I find it weird that you changed the alternator, battery, and fuse and then started getting this problem. I would make sure those things are tip top first.

Ill get them tested but im pretty sure they're fine. The problem only ever happens for about a minute then goes away. It only ever happens once a day. And when I shut the car off after and turn it on again, problem is gone.

Definitely sounds like a short in the steering column or the pressure witch on the PS pump.. I wasn't trying to call you out on your car running, I'm just trying to be 100% to rule out certain things. The switch should be easily located on the PS pump. It will be the only thing having a wire running to it.
