ok guys i just got the car and when i start up the car it ticks a little from the head but i was told 1g's are known to do that. second the stock oil gauge goes to about the first mark at cold idle then drops to nothing but when i get going the gauge goes back up close to the first mark. what can it be? bad oil pump oil sending unit?

The tick in the head is lifter tick. If you want to make it stop replace the stock lifters with the larger opening 3g lifters. Check out this thread for a pic I posted comparing the stock and 3g lifters side by side.

The stock oil pressure gauge is pretty worthless to start with. You can check the sending unit to make sure that the connector is making a good connection. It is located on the oil filter housing near the oil filter. Make sure the connector is clean from oil and dirt, might want to rough it up with some sand paper. If you want accurate oil pressure reading you can get an aftermaket gauge. Make sure you get one with a 0-150 sweep as a 0-100 will get maxed out, especially if you eliminate the balance shafts.

Hope this helps!

ok so the stock one isnt accurate. ok but how come when i come to a complete stop the oil gauge goes all the way down and sometimes the red oil light flicks on?

The lifter ticks are common, and I believe they make revised lifters with a bigger opening. The stock pressure senders are garbage, and tend to have issues like that. I replaced mine with an Autometer. However, if your oil light comes on, you may be low on oil, and it flickers when you turn and the oil sloshes around. Did you check for leaks under your car?

no leaks and the oil is full in face a little over full. i just changed the oil like a week ago with 5w30 valvoline synpower. could that be the problem?

Did you make sure that the connection is clean like I described above?

That would explain his gauge, but that doesn't explain his oil light flickering. The dummy light runs off of a different sending unit... at least in the 2G cars, are the 1Gs different?

There are 2 different sensors but they are right next to each other on the oil filter housing and both need a good, clean connection.

id def try a real gauges, if its coming up with a weak reading on the stock gauge u wanna make sure what your actual pressure is b4 u just rule the stock gauge insufficient

I hope this is relevant to the discussion:

I have a '91 Eclipse GS N/T 4G63 with a 5-speed manual. The engine was bought from one of those "low mileage Japanese engine" places and the placement of the oil pressure sending unit looks way different from many other 1G 4G63 setups I've seen. Also, I don't have the "idiot light" low oil sending unit installed. I noticed that was missing after some research. I guess my question is, where should everything be?

Here's a pic:

The stock warning light is not junk, but the gauge is. If you are hitting the warning light try going to 10w30 which is recommended. 5w30 is only recommended in Arctic climates. If that doesn't help then you gotta find out why the pressure is so low with a real gauge.

damm it should of used 10w30 i guess ill change my new 5w30 oil for some 10w30 and probably going to clean up the connection first to see if that works if not geting new sending units wont be a problem for me

Why do so many people think the cold weight matters at operating temp?

0w30 or 10w30, it's all 30 weight at temp.
