Just a quick question.

I have a 16g turbo setup for my 1G but i am currently stock with exception of a few things. How safe is it to just swap it out with the stock turbo without changing the stock fuel setup and just run 12-13lbs with a boost controller??? I will eventually be modding it over time, but just curious if it is possible to do so now or should i wait. :hmm:

I would get a more fuel, fuel pump, injectors perhaps 650cc. Do you have a logger, and a way to adjust the fuel. Wait a bit and get what you need just my opionon since your are upgrading later anyway.

Use a datalogger. Watch for high idc values or a lean O2 signal.

You should be fine running straight wastegate pressure, assuming you are using the stock 12-14psi actuator and can eliminate any boost creep. Remember, a boost controller cannot decrease boost below the what the spring in the WG actuator is.

So your saying that I should just wait. Im going to probably hold off on the injectors because i dont have the money or time to tune my car. And as for a data logger my buddy who owns a 91 laser 20psi has one and he has been helping me on my slow build. So basically i cannot just swap it out and expect it to run right?? I was told that the "safe" way to do it is to get the fuel pump and fuel regulator and run under 15psi, without having to tune it if i get bigger injectors. Anyone have any suggestions on next mods for the 16g and ones for the future???

Thank You

What they are saying is if you can keep the boost to stay at 12psi, you should be good with just a fuel pump rewire. Obviously you'll need to use a logger to verify everything.
The point they are trying to make is that 16gs are notorious for "boost creep" which means when you try and set it at 10psi for example, throughout the rpms the boost will increase above the 10psi due to poor wastegate evacuation and if you dont have the fuel system can damage some things.
There are many threads on eliminating boost creep with the 16gs to run at consistant boost levels.

why does everyone insist on answering the same questions over and over again? Make him search for god sakes, this is the most FAQ other than "can I put a 4g63 in my rs/gs pretty please?"

I agree(even though i posted). :thumb:
I used this site solely as a resource to problem solving and learning for about 2years before i ever even posted anything

I ran a 16g in my 1g with just a fuel pump upgrade for over a year at 9 psi boost pressure straight off the wastegate. Never had any issues. A 16g at 9-12 psi doesn't flow much more than a 14b. You should be fine.

we've already addressed that he will be safe at that level, but if it creeps, it may be a different story.
Did you do any porting, etc to eliminate any creep?

I'm running 15 psi with only an upgraded fuel pump (evo 9 pump) on a evo3 16g that's ported, evo3 o2 housing that's ported with the 34mm flapper, and ported evo3 manifold.

I have no problem whatsoever with it, I can wind it pretty, although I feel most of the power drops off at around 5500 to 6000 rpm, no point in really going higher, and don't hit fuel cut.

I was running at 18 psi, and I would randomly get fuel cut, so I had to take it back some.

I highly suggest getting it ported, and doing some in depth searching to find the answers you're looking for, cause all the answers are here.

Whatever you do, good luck, and when you run the 16g it'll make you happy in the pants LOL.

Yes, i had the o2 housing ported. No boost creep at all.

bottom line is: until you get all the supporting mods a 14b will do fine for you. If you talk to people who have had there car for more than a few moths you will find that they will tell you to get the supporting mods done first.

I got my 1992 awd the day i turned 16 and still have it 10 years later. i have been there done that with everything on these cars. It pays off to do things in a certain sequence. I know it kinda sucks at the time, but pays off in the long run and allows you time to learn and get things right.

just my 2 cents :thumb:

Thanks everyone!

I just ordered a holly fuel pump and an AEM fuel pressure regulator today so i think ill be alright for now. And as for doing my research, i have been on this site every day for about like 6 months before i registered and have done my homework, i was just curious if anybody has done this "safely". Any other suggestions on what mod to do next besides the logger and fuel mods??? I appreciate all the help and know that 8 out of 10 people on this site know their stuff, im just looking for some direction.
