Sticky Tires..yes? No?

hey guys...just wondering about the sticky tires....if its just a gimick...cause they are incredible in traction people say..but do they last long? i dont want to have to change my tires like 3 months later you know? ...how good are they ...reallyWTF
 
no not drag slicks....sticky tires......but they ware out fast...some ppl say the last jsut one summer...not even...so im just wondering if thats true data

I ran a set of Eagle F1s on my FWD and loved them. I used them from April to October and put about 10k miles on them. They were a great tire but they did wear out extremely quickly. By that I mean, they still hooked up better then any tire I've ever had but you could notice a difference from when I first put them on and took them off.
 
I had a buddy that had micky thompson sportsman pros on his car and they were sticky and wrinkle wall. hooked awesome but they sucked for driving on. he ended up hitting someone because of them. and they did wear out fast. can't say how fast but I don't think he got a summer out of them.
 
It depends on how stick they tires are, and what the tread rating is.

I wanted some cheap (in pricE) tires that performed well. I came across General Exclaim UHP tires. They are classified as an Ultra high Performance summer tire, but they have sometinhg like a 320 tread rating. I used them for three months, and barely noticed ANY tread decrease - but, they still stuck nicely.
 
Yokohama Parada Spec II's are great. I had them on my 3G GT and they always hooked good and didn't wear out quick in my opinion. I thought that it was a nicely balanced tire. I run Kuhmo Supra's now and I hate them. I am smoking all four tires on a hard launch, but they do last a long time and they were on the car when I bought it so I guess I shouldn't complain to much.
 
I have potenza G009s and Ive put over 13k miles on them and there is like 70% tread left, and they are real nice summer tires, and pretty sticky. The nitto NT01's are really sticky tires, street legal but nearly slicks. The falken azenis's(sp?) are really sticky tires that are z rate for speed, and very very nicely priced, starting at 79$, and going up to 213$ for tires that will fit 18" rims. Be a little more specific by what you mean by sticky. Like I interperate that as being soft rubber tires that will grip real nice, and most will wear out relitively quickly and even quicker if you do hard launches all the time and do break stances.
 
I swear by "sticky" tires. I've had many different tires on my 2 Eclipses in the past 4 years, and with tires, you definitely get what you pay for.

For my FWD applications, I've noticed that it was worth the extra money to pay for something that had a better dry traction rating. I usually shop on www.tirerack.com and they have a really good rating system for all the tires they sell. I've come to realize that their information regarding tire wear, dry traction, wet traction, etc., is very accurate.

KaLo - You, being AWD and mostly stock (I'm assuming), would probably not need sticky tires as much as us FWD guys do.

Good catch there Paul. I didn't realize he was AWD. Until your making quite a bit of power, being AWD, your car should basically hook-up regardless. A buddy of mine runs 57$ a peice Hercules tires and they hook up his 360hp Talon.

Fwd on the other hand... :p
 
Im using BFG KD(dry only) Tires, there almost as soft as a nitto, Solo 1 auto cross cars run them.

They stick, and handling is awsome......Best tire ive owned so far, they were good also.

Hahah I have some nexens on my 18s on my awd for daiily. I didnt need anything too sticky. Thats what track rims and tires are for! Get some nice R or A compounds for those next...ill finally be able to get some consistent numbers with those.

I personally run Yokohama Parada Spec IIs but that's because I couldn't find anything else to spend money on.. :shhh:
 
perhaps you should look at more things in a tire than just launching traction. example, i bought my potenzas because they were the next best tire, in the size i wanted, to the bridgestone traction t/a's, but something like 15% less expensive. while these are excellent tires for launching, they improved my car's braking capabilities (in all types of weather) so much over the eagles that i had; i think that is the main reason i would consider buying them for another car
 
i can recommend a few tires through first hand experience. depending on price, the lowest price would be the hankook ventus rs-2, these are the autocross tires by hankook. they are extremely sticky and have a nice thick sidewall. they are a bit loud, but the grip better than the other two tires im gonna tell you about. they are about 110 for a 225/40/17. we are seeing these wearing at around 10k miles, treadwear is 200. The next on the list is the BF Goodrich KDW2 (or KDW-NT). This is also a very sticky tire, a little less noisy than the hankooks, and with a 300 treadwear, they should last a lot longer. The next is the most expensive, the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. These are the new tread design over the pilot sports with larger tread blocks. They are almost as sticky as the hankooks, but at a price of $200 each. They have a 200 treadwear but have lasted 20k miles before we changed them out. Since you are awd, another good tire to look at are the Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S. These are pretty sticky and have a 400 treadwear. They are around $160 per tire.

Out of the three, the KDW2 are the median, good treadwear and soft enough rubber. The Hankooks outperform the Michelin's that are twice as expensive.

Some tires to stay away from: Kuhmo Ecsta 712 and Yokohama ES100. The 712's dont grip for sh*t and the es100's wear out prematurely.

I had a set of these on my last FWD car and they are TERRIBLE tires. They were VERY noisy on the freeway, gripped great and had some wonderful wet weather performance....for the first 10k miles. After that they were about as sticky as an h rated geo metro tire but wore out as quick as a super sticky race tire.

glad to see i am not the only one that thinks this of these tires
