Steering Column Mounted Boost Gauge [Merged 8-8] gauges pod mounts mount

Smithoid Concepts was making a really nice one for a 1g but he put that business on hold for now unfortunately. I was on his case to make a steering column pod for a 2g :)

Yeah I know about those, but I also know that it would take a ton of work to get that in my 1g.:p

Grant it you have a 2g so it looks somewhat different, but on my 1g I am thinking more out towards the sides. And on a 1g it would block the stock boost gauge, and maybe 0-10mph.

Kinda looks like this, excuse the 30 second MSpaint job

yeah i understand how you would do it. Mine blocks below like 25mph but do you really need to know what exact speed your doing that slowly? Stock boost gauge you don't really use every do you?

Well I'd be blocking the stock boost gauge with a VDO one, so no use for it at all. I can see how your's blocks the 0-25mph but a 1g the speedo is further to the right, but then again I am moving the gauge further over to the right too. Don't really care as long as it doesnt block anything over 35mph.

Did you use the vfaq on making your own gauge?

I'd rock it. Actually, I just asked my friend to make me a custom fiberglass one to fit right there for my boost gauge. I kinda like it better than the a-pillar.

They have been making them for years for VW's i just installed one on a 20th edition GTI. You could make them for just about any car. There was also another company who just put out a steering column piece that holds 2 gauges that looks very slick.

It is the first time I have seen it for our cars but they are pretty common for gauge mounting in other makes.

A guy over at 2gnt.com has been making them for a while. that ad is actually his or someone stole his pictures but he is a kewl guy go check it out at 2gnt.com

I hope this is the right forum for this.

I'm looking for a stering column gauge pod for the 2g eclipse dont want to get a pillar cluster? If any one knows what Im talking about and knows where or who has them your help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had my boost gauge mounted on the A-pillar, in the center vent, and under the stereo. I was never satisfied with where my boost gauge was because no matter where it was mounted, it was so far out of my way to look at it when I was doing my testing/tuning or running down the quarter mile. I got the idea when I saw a column mounted gauge on an RX-7 in a magazine. Since nobody makes instrument cluster gauge pods for 1G's I had to make my own custom setup.

All you need is a 3" U-Bolt and the appropriate drill. The U-Bolt should come with the appropriate nuts as well as a bar that you put on the underside. Use the bar to drill the holes through the column cover, making sure you check for clearance on the other side of the cover. Slide the u-bolt around the boost gauge. The fit is quite tight so be sure to do this carefully or you may damage your boost gauge. Then bolt the u-bolt to the cover and tighten everything back up. It's that simple. Also, if you're running a nylon line, just be careful when you're moving it that you don't kink the line.

PROS: It's right in my field of view so I'm not having to take my eyes too far off of the road or from the tachometer when I'm making a WOT run, and I can see exactly what I'm boosting.

CONS: It now completely blocks my oil pressure gauge. I can see all the idiots lights so I'm not too worried. That gauge moved too slowly to be of any use to me anyway. By the time it showed that your oil pressure was too low, your engine would be a worthless lump of iron already.

That top picture is deceptive, with where the gauge sits in relation to the oil pressure gauge. Maybe if you were Yao and your head was sticking through the sunroof you'd have that point of view.

That's my five-minute-instruction for the day, class dismissed. :talon:

I had mine mounted there when i first got it, and my A-pillar pod wasn't in yet. But i just used zip ties, much cheaper. But i made sure to leave enough slack in the boost hose so i could run it in the A-pillar without getting new hose.

If you mount it to the left side of the steering column the only gauge you will not be able to see while sitting in your normal driving position will be the factory boost gauge. ;)

What kind of bracket are you using? Is that something you fabbed up? What about the two idiot lights that sit between the oil gauge and the tach, how visible are those still?

I was thinking of putting it there, but I rechipped my ecu so now the factory boost gauge is my new knock meter.

I really wouldn't worry about any of the idiot lights, you will be able to tell if your car is running wrong before you will need those idiot lights, and if they did light up you could see the glow from them.. I personaly don't like it there, but thats just me, i guess in person my mind might change but from the pic i don't like it.. but good job on mounting it, at least it won't be too far out of your normal view :thumb:
