starting problems 1997 gsx

just bought my dsm... it makes a horrible grinding/scraping noise when turning key, it will grind about 3 times before firing.. guy before me said he replaced starter, which it did look brand new, but im wondering if the nose cone was wrong.. The teeth on the flywheel are a little chewed up on the outside and so is the outside of the bendix (kinda looks like they might be barley touching when starting).. but its a really loud horrible noise..

car also smells like fuel inside, and i believe it was a p0171 code? fuel regulator? easy fix?

and ive noticed that its very hard to push the car while front wheels are turned (while starter is out)... is because its awd? i mean im 6'4 and a pretty big guy and cant push it by myself while wheels are turned...

any ideas for any of these problems will be greatly appreciated

I would check your flywheel and starter for engagement issues.

i pulled the starter and like i said, the outside of the flywheel and outside of the bendix looked a little chewed up.. just wondering if anyone has a solution besides shimming the starter.. but im guessing its the wrong nose cone on the starter, thanks for the advice bro

Make sure your motor mounts are in good ahape.. I had an issue where my rear one broke and the starter wouldn't engage properly onto the flywheel. Just a thought of course, good luck

well i just bought all 4 brand new motor mounts because they are all f'd... do you guys think motor mounts could cause the trans to grind/kick me out of 1st gear and grind into reverse?

the old starter must of chewed up the flywheel now you are going to have to change it maybe get an aluminum one if you don't have one.

its not that messed up.. neither need replacing (yet) because i checked it out instead of starting it over and over again.. trying to figure out the problem before i put the starter back in... i want to drive my gsx, my 420a's maf is screwed up and its getting the gas mileage of a bugatti veyron.. and i drive 120 miles everyday
