I reasantly had the head gasget go in my TSi which is nice because I got 230,000 miles out of it. On top of that my engine spits a blue smoke when at stoplights. I took out my turbo and rebuilt it and it still spit blue smoke, so I am assuming that it is the valve seals. I was looking one dsm www.parts.com. they are having a sale on there heads. and have two questions.

:talon: Is haveing a stage one ported head ok for daily driving?

and

:talon: Is it a good idea to have the intake side ported?

I don't know wich forum to post this in. They arn't simple bolt on questions but I haven't built a stage two racer...Yet. So I apologize if this is in the wrong place.

Well for DSMParts' heads, the only difference between the stock head and the stage 1 is the stage 1 has a "competition" valve job and SS valves. If that is worth the $340 price difference to you, go for it. This is completely subjective and is 100% up to you.

You don't actually get any port work until you step up to the stage 2 head (at least on DSMParts). Ported anything is fine for daily driving as long as it maintains its structural integrity. Also, one of (if not the) most important things to do in terms of porting is matching surfaces. So if you get a ported head (no matter if it's mild or extreme), you are going to need to port your intake and exhaust manifolds to match the ports to each other.

If it were me, Id do it once and do it right. If you have 230,000 miles on your motor its most likely about time for a rebuild. I'd pull the whole motor and throw rings on it and check the ring lands for breaks. Id get new valve seals and rebuild the head. Id also throw a new oil pump, water pump, and timing belt on and put the motor back in. Just me tho. Try a leak down test to determine motor health beforehand ofcourse. Porting wont help you much if you have a dead cylinder anyways.

Your valve guides and seals are shot causing the oil burn. You dont need an all out race head.
Just a good complete rebuild with the ports cleaned up from casting flaws is what you need. If your going to use your head I would do new valves, guides, seals, bowl clean up and clean up the ports.

I'm fairly certain that my cylinders are good compression wise. it ran like a champ except for a little lifter tick. but I'll check the compression to be cretin. and for sure get new rings.

the reason for the stage one head is i wanted a bit more horses from the engine while while I'm there without doing any thing to major. although i had thought about replacing the pistons with some (modified) 2g pistons.

i had herd that porting the intake manifold it self was not a good thing because the roughness of the cast actually gives a better burn because it stirs up the air entering the cylinder. but i guess maybe a a throttle body spacer would solve that. this statement is really more of a question. ????WTF :D

NO, NO, NO; fairly certain is not acceptable!!

200,000 is the end of the road. It is time to do the bottom end if your doing any thing major. If your comfortable pulling your cylinder head, your capable of pulling the block. Unless your on a STRICT budget or have only one car; which are both DSM no no's.

If you'd like my $.02 on preparation and organisation shoot me a PM.

cash - space - time - tools - organisation - confidence - determination - knowledge. In that order.

And I cant stress the determination and organisation part enough!

I love the way you put that. This should be written in a book somewhere! It took me 5 years before i realized how important the order of these things were LOL!
